Pair Quotation Portfolio

The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game

Directions: 

      1.     Work in pairs on this project.

2.     Select six quotations from this book which are meaningful to you or your understanding of Michael Oher’s life and accomplishments.  If you would prefer, select quotations about Leigh Anne Tuohy and her role in Michael’s development.

3.     Type.

4.     Passages/quotations must be at least two sentences long.  Select the quotations by working together.  Each of you should complete the questions on three quotations.

5.     Before answering the following questions about each quotation, type the quotation in its entirety and put the page number where it may be found like this (235).

                 ü First, provide relevance by explaining how the passage fits into the story of either Michael’s life or that of Leigh Anne Tuohy.

ü Second, react to the passage as a reader.  Make me understand why you selected it.  Consider some of the following suggestions in your response:

Why does the passage impress, puzzle, or horrify you?

Do you find the author’s use of language appealing or powerful?

Does the passage remind you of a situation in your own life?

Does the passage challenge or expand your thinking?  

6.     You should write a minimum of 3/4 page on each of the selected quotations.

7.     Each of you is to complete the portfolio by writing a letter to me about the book, or assignment, essentially anything you would like to say about it.  The letter should begin “Dear         Mrs. Morey,” end with your signature, and be 1-2 pages in length.

 

Endurance Group Portfolio

 

 1.     Write a 2-3 page typed reaction to this adventurous account of life on the ice.  Include a brief summary and your personal response to an almost unbelievable experience.  Quote from the text to support your opinions.

 2.     Choose any 2 of the following.  (Note:  In these demonstrations of your understanding of this book, please pay attention to the presentation and appearance of your work.  Make it attractive and use your creativity!)

 ü Cast a movie version of this expedition.  Who would you select to play major roles?  Why?

 ü Draw a map depicting the journey of the Endurance that is clearer and more detailed than the one in the book.

 ü Draw a series of three pictures which illustrate what life on the ice for such a long time must have been like.

 ü Write a poem about Antarctica , life on the ice, the expedition, or the men of the expedition, etc.

 ü Construct a timeline which shows major events and turns of events in life on the ice.

 3.     EQ:  Ernest Shackleton, by most criteria, would certainly be considered a hero.  Why?  What is there in him as a man, as an explorer, as a leader that makes him a hero?  Use Campbell 's criteria in a 1 ½ - 2 page response.

 

Into Thin Air Portfolio

Individual 

1.  Write a 2-3 page typed reaction to this stirring account of climbing the tallest mountain in the world.  Include a brief summary, as well as your personal reaction to the events and incidents described.  Quote from the book to support your conclusions.

2.  Choose any 3 of the following:

Cast a movie version of Krakauer's book, selecting any actors you wish, but being      sure to connect something about these choices to the author's descriptions.

bullet

Read  Into the Wild, also by Jon Krakauer, and write a reaction  (2-3 pages) to that book.

bullet

 Illustrate three important events or incidents from the book.  Briefly describe what you have selected and why.

bullet

 Write a 1-2 page letter to the author expressing your viewpoint on his memoir, the assault on Everest, etc., or any questions about the climb that concern you.  (1-2 pages)

bullet

 Write a poem depicting an element of the "man against nature" theme.

bullet

 Construct a timeline which shows important events in the memoir.

3.  EQ:  Who are the heroes in this account of mountaineering?  What makes them heroes?  Choose 2 or 3 individuals that you believe demonstrate heroism and connect them to Campbell's criteria. 

 

Icebound PowerPoint Project

Complete as a group.

 

Procedure:  After reading or reviewing Icebound, reflect on the major individuals, issues, elements, and significant passages from the text.  Incorporate this information on Power Point slides.  Note:  This is meant to be a visual activity, which means that presentation and creativity are important, but the writing that is done also needs to be effective.  PowerPoint information is normally kept to a minimum, but the following is a perfectly acceptable use of the program in educational activities.  Remember, this is a group effort, and so there should be no I think here!

 

Rubric for the Power Point Project

(Numbers of slides are only suggestions, but no more than 12 please.)

 First slide:  Include the complete title and author of the book, as well as group member names (5 points).

 Second-Third Slides:  Include who is important and why—a minimum of three people (15 points).

 Fourth-Fifth Slides:  Include three significant passages.  Cite page numbers and explain the importance of each one (15 points).

 Sixth-Seventh Slides:  Answer the EQ, “What makes a hero?” with reference to specific individuals and Campbell’s criteria(25 points).

 Eighth Slide:  Include a statement that illustrates the group’s understanding of an important theme in this book (20 points).

 Use visual images throughout to represent a person, event, symbol, or other issue in this book (10 points).

 Ninth Slide: Do you give this work a “thumbs-up” or “thumbs down?”  Give three reasons for the group decision (10 points).
