About Rescued Chows

Sweetie Pie
Please go to Chow
Stories
to read about her survival against all odds.
Most abandoned Chow Chows became that way through
no fault of their own. Their owners, who just could not keep
them because they have moved, have a new baby, divorced, or
some other crisis gave them up. Unfortunately most of them
are strays because their owners allow them to run loose and
became lost or abandoned by turning them to run loose. The
average age of chows in rescue is young to adult dogs. Usually
the puppies in rescue are mixes. Pure bred puppies are rarely
abandoned.
Most people are reluctant to adopt an adult chow
because of the myth that adult chows can't adjust to a new
home or be retrained. This is not true. There may be an adjustment
period for any new adoption but they do adjust and bond to
their new family. Please read Shelby & Napoleon's story
& the other stories on the Happy
Tails link.
When a Chow is rescued, the Chow Rescue Volunteer
takes the Chow for a veterinary examination, vaccinations,
and heartworm tested at 6 months or older, and temperament
tested before adoption. All chows are spayed or neutered to
keep from adding to the pet overpopulation problem. Please
view the chows
for adoption link to find your next best friend. If the
type of chow you are looking for is not listed, please fill
out a non-binding adoption application & we'll let you know
when one becomes available.
