When you think of Search & Rescue or Drug Enforcement dogs what breed do you think of? Chow Chows? Probably not! But here is a short account of a chow chow that worked for a living as a Drug and Explosives sniffer!!
My first K-9 was a purebred Black chow chow that I adopted as a puppy. I wanted to see what she could do so at 6 months of age my buddies in the USAF SP-K9 corps decided to do what had never been done---train a chow chow! We were in training for close to 2 years with scents-- she did very well with Marijuana and C-4 explosives. She had 21 arrests to her credit before retiring at the age of 10 to live out the rest of her days in luxury. But, she still wanted to work so we continued training just so she wouldn't get bored. She not only served faithfully with me as a partner for 10 yrs but she was also my child. I have been without a K-9 now for 2 years and miss having one around---life just isn't the same without a chow.
