A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR ARTISTS
Debbie Kmak - Kay Hernandez

Debbie Kmak

Growing up in Montana and Wyoming and then spending 15 years in Chicago, gave this transplant a unique eye for color and texture. This evolved into a love of mixed-media, working with pastels, acrylic, silk dying, and other forms of textile painting.  She discovered wire almost a decade ago and has become an accomplished wire artist, utilizing sterling silver, gold and a lot of the new colored craft wire.  Combining wire with the stones she learned to love along with new gemstone discoveries and pearls she has created an incredible line of unique jewelry.  She has even incorporated her love of fabric into this medium by weaving with the wire.  She says, "I use the flow and movement of the fabric and metal to let each piece create itself."  Her work has been purchased by patrons throughout the United States, Colombia and England.

As an instructor, Debbie has taught art at all levels both privately and in workshops throughout the Dallas area, including Richardson, Farmers Branch and Garland.  She was an Artist-in-Residence at the former Main Street Gallery Studio in Richardson and has been a regular instructor at the Craft Guild of Dallas teaching both Wire Art and Children's Summer Art Camps.  She has also taught jewelry-making and silk-painting workshops at the Teen Centers in the Dallas Public Library and is a frequently invited wire wrapping instructor at Argenta Bead Company (formerly Little Rocks, Beads and Gems) in North Little Rock, AR.  She is currently teaching an after school fine art program to K-5 children.

  Kay Hernandez

The "Grandma Moses II" of the group, Kay began her art career later in life after spending four decades of her working life as a Registered Nurse.

In the early 1990's she decided she needed to work on the right side of her brain and took a course which indicated a talent for drawing and creating portraits which she does for fun.   But the drawing class was just the beginning - there was a crystal mine.... which led to that wire-wrapping class that she convinced Debbie and Candy to take with her .....    But a bit of history first --- Kay started this path of wire for herself and Debbie (they met in a drawing class) with a trip to Arkansas years ago with some of her pals.  As a souvenir, she wanted to give everyone a wrapped pendant of the crystals they had "dug" up.  After a lengthy search, one jeweler finally suggested she just "learn how to do it herself".  Thus, the journey began.

She says, "I have discovered that every stone has its own personality.  The different twists, turns and whorls of the stone tell me how it wants to be wrapped, so each piece I create is unique.  I love to work with nature’s products and to focus on and capture individual personalities... whether it’s that of a stone or of a dear friend."

She recently semi-retired from nursing but is keeping her hand in things providing older adult seminars and Alzheimer care information as well as doing health assessments.  She is also currently teaching one day a week helping prepare LVN's who want to transition up to Registered Nurses.

In 2002 she was chosen by her peers as one of the "Top 100 Nurses in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Area".
