name of Douglas Wolrich from
There was little time spent on the decision.
Having a wonderful family and being a young man in his early 60s, it was clear
to him that he had to have this lifesaving procedure. There was just one thing
he may end up with a colostomy.
Doug put off the colostomy by having a
smaller portion of his colon removed, the bare minimum one could say. When
after a year it was apparent that further surgery and a colostomy would be
required, Doug embarked on a new journey in life, a life that now included a
new title, colostomate.
Four years went by and Doug did what he had
to do when it came to colostomy care. He didn't care for it, but he was
immensely grateful that he was cancer-free and felt that having a happy life
with a colostomy was better than having no life at all. Still, there was a
feeling of fear growing in Doug. Where would he be when he needed to do
colostomy care? Why couldn't every mall or restaurant have private facilities
for people who needed them?
“I just got fed up with being afraid to go
out,” Doug said. So he decided to stick to the old adage “necessity is the
mother of invention” and came up with FLUSHABLE OSTOMY LINERS.” Doug was his

FLUSHABLE OSTOMY LINERS are thin,
transparent, flushable liner bags that are placed inside the ostomy pouch. The

I feel it is important for all colostomates
to know about this new product. My husband has been using Flushable Ostomy
Liners since 1998 and it has made a difference in his life and mine. He is able

WHY USE LINERS?:
REASONS COLOSTOMY PATIENTS WILL WANT TO USE THESE LINERS:

· Liner flushes in a flash making it easy for the patient. No worry about disposing of any waste material. |

· Ability to change the liner quickly (1-2 minutes). No reason to carry any additional supplies. |

· Eliminates mess, stress and time for emptying a pouch. No need for water or any other fixture except, of course, a toilet. |

· A one-piece system can change to a two-piece system by using the liners. One never has to wash a pouch again or worry about disposing waste of material. |
|
· One using an open-ended pouch can easily switch to a closed-end pouch. One never has to sit in a bathroom washing an open-ended pouch or have a clip rubbing against one's skin. |

· Liners with a filtered pouch keep the filter free of waste material. There can be a savings by changing a pouch at each flange change. |

· Though designed for colostomies, the liner may be used for ileostomies with the help of fluid thickeners. This depends upon the individual situation. |
Because the liners only cost approximately
21 cents each, you can change them three or four times a day or as needed. The
pouch can be changed every three or four days when you change your flange
(wafer). It is usually best after taking a shower so that you can have the
feeling of a new fresh pouch. After you have used the liner for a while, you
will never again be without it.
DISPOSABLE, FLUSHABLE OSTOMY POUCH LINERS
ARE FOR USE WITH TWO-PIECE OSTOMY SYSTEMS AND ARE DESIGNED FOR USE IN PRIMARY
SEWAGE SYSTEMS. THEY SHOULD NOT BE FLUSHED INTO NATURAL WATERWAYS, SEPTIC TANKS
OR AERATION SYSTEMS. WHEN TRAVELING FLUSH ONLY IN VEHICLES THAT ARE NOT POSTED
TO THE CONTRARY. IF YOU HAVE A SEPTIC SYSTEM, LOOK INTO A PRODUCT CALLED DIAPER
GENIE, FOR DISPOSING PART OF YOUR WASTE MATERIAL INTO THE TOILET AND THE LINER
INTO THE DIAPER GENIE WHEN YOU ARE AT HOME.

HOW IT WORKS:
THE EASIEST WAY TO PLACE THE LINER
1. PLACE THE LINER INTO THE POUCH USING TWO
FINGERS TO PUSH THE LINER INTO THE POUCH OPENING.
2. USING TWO FINGERS, INSERT THE LINER AND
WORK ONE SIDE OF THE LINER OVER TO ONE SIDE OF THE POUCH. NOW HOLDING THE LINER
AND POUCH TIGHTLY TOGETHER WITH YOUR FREE HAND, USE THE SAME TWO FINGERS TO
WORK THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LINER OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE POUCH.
3. THE LINER IS NOW IN THE RIGHT POSITION
INSIDE THE POUCH. FILL THE LINER OUT WITH A QUICK BLOW INTO THE OPENING. YOU
CAN USE A
4. NOW PLACE THREE FINGERS INTO THE MOUTH OF
THE LINER AND HOLD THE LINER TIGHTLY TO THE POUCH RING. WITH THE FREE HAND,
SPREAD THE LOOSE LINER MATERIAL EVENLY AROUND THE POUCH RING. YOU CAN NOW
FIDDLE A BIT AND SMOOTH OUT ANY LITTLE WRINKLES AROUND THE RING BUT DON'T WORRY
ABOUT THE WRINKLES AS YOU WILL NOT GET THEM OUT AND IT WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON
THE CLOSING OF THE POUCH.
5. YOU ARE NOW READY TO SNAP THE POUCH AND
LINER ONTO THE FLANGE. AFTER SNAPPING THE LINER ONTO THE FLANGE, TAKE THE
BOTTOM OF THE POUCH AND FOLD IT IN HALF. YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THERE IS AIR IN
THE POUCH. BURP THE POUCH BY OPENING THE RING AND LETTING THE AIR OUT, WHILE
HOLDING THE POUCH IN HALF, SNAP THE LINER AND RING ONTO THE FLANGE.
6. THE PINHOLES PLACED IN THE LINER'S
PROTECTED AREA ALLOW THE GAS TO ESCAPE INTO THE POUCH. THE PINHOLES CAN BE DONE
FOR MANY LINERS AT ONE TIME (TAKE TEN TO FIFTEEN LINERS AND PUT THE PINHOLES IN
ALL AT ONCE).
DO NOT PUT PIN HOLES IF YOU HAVE AN ILEOSTOMY!
7. WHEN REMOVING THE LINER, STAND OVER THE
TOILET AND LIFT THE LINER OUT OF THE POUCH. IF OVERLOADED, SQUEEZE THE BOTTOM
OF THE LINER AND EASE IT THROUGH THE OPENING OF THE RING AND THEN TIP THE LINER
AND WITH TWO FINGERS IN A SCISSORS-LIKE ACTION, SQUEEZE THE MATERIAL INTO THE
TOILET. IT IS ADVISABLE TO CHANGE THE LINER FREQUENTLY TO KEEP THE MATERIAL AND
THE ODOR TO A MINIMUM.
8. A PIECE OF VINEGAR SOAKED TISSUE INSERTED
INTO THE POUCH HELPS TO KEEP THE POUCH FRESH AND CLEAN. YOU CAN ALSO USE A
PRODUCT LIKE BANISH OR SOME OTHER ODOR ELIMINATOR. EACH LINER COSTS
APPROXIMATELY 21 CENTS COMPARED TO THE POUCH. AT APPROXIMATELY $2.72 PER POUCH,
YOU CAN USE SEVENTEEN LINERS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE POUCH.
MAKE
SURE THE SEAL IS TIGHT WHEN SNAPPING THE POUCH TO THE WAFER!
