Mr. Martin began tutelage
in the Chinese Martial art of Northern Shaolin Kung-Fu in 1981. He has
studied with Sifu Mike Gillespie (of Anne Arbor Michigan) and Sifu Mike
Wheeler (Mansfield, Ohio). He has acquired quite a diverse background in the
martial and healing arts. He has since then studied with many highly
respected teachers representing various disciplines ranging from Tai Chi
Chuan, Ba Gua Chang, Northern and Southern Kung Fu, Qi Gong, Aikido, Massage,
Acupressure and Nishi Health System. |

As a member of the Hawaii Central Pacific Aikido Association
for 3 years, under the late Takaji Ishida Sensei 8th Dan, he taught
children’s Aikido classes while earning his 1st Kyu Brown Belt. He also took
part in various seminars by visiting Shihan (8th Dan) from Japans Hombu Dojo,
which helped his understanding of the morals and philosophies behind the
arts. In addition, for a short time, he expanded his studies to include Southern Tiger Crane Kung Fu with BuckSam Kong’s’ Siu Lum Pai Association Hawaii branch. |

During the early 1980’s he competed in over 25 martial arts
tournaments attaining 1st and 2nd place regularly. He participated mainly for
the experience and exchange of knowledge. From 1987 to 1997 During his 10 yr career in the United States
Navy, he participated in the free exchange of his martial knowledge while
also teaching many people the benefits of the Chinese Martial Arts and its
martial ideals. In addition, he readily maintained an outstanding record in
military physical readiness, and certified yearly in CPR and First Aid. |

Mr. Martin has taught and assisted with classes at various
locations in the surrounding Mansfield, Ohio area such as Outlooke Pointe
Assistive Living (Tai Chi), MedCentral Fitness Center (Tai Chi), Mansfield’s 1st
Congregational Church, (Tai Chi), Mansfield Friendly House, (Kung Fu),
UMADOAP (Kung Fu), Madison Adult Education (Internal Arts), Mansfield, Marion
and Shelby YMCA (Internal Arts), Mt Vernon Knox County Career Center, and
public workshops. Mr. Martin holds two Associate Degrees in the Applied Sciences
and works in the electronics and quality assurance field on breath alcohol
and gas analyzers. He regularly attends Kung Fu, Tai Chi Chuan, Ba Gua Chang,
Qi Gong, and Acupressure workshops held by Master George Ling Hu. |

In 1998 he founded the Purple Bamboo
Institute to spread the knowledge he has acquired.
He currently teaches Longfist Kung-Fu at the Family Martial Arts Center, Tai
Chi Chuan and Qi Gong at the Ohio State University - Mansfield Campus.
While a strict teacher, he is easygoing and very open with his knowledge. His focus is centered upon the health aspects attributed to the
Martial Arts and his main interest is their holistic / healing benefits. This
focus helped him to survive a recent challenge when he was diagnosed with a
rare form of leukemia called Hairy Cell and has shown him
one of the many benefits attributed to martial practice. |

Ho” Always a
Beginner Sifu Martin holds to this approach in his martial pursuits. He
considers himself a student first and remains close to this ideal. During his
career, he has connected with many people comprised of a wide martial
background, from karate, to ju-jitsu, aikido, tai chi, boxing and hakuda. He
has provided material for various health articles throughout the years, and
is a member of several organizations, including: The Qi Gong Institute, The International Qi Gong Alliance, All
Experts. A firm believer of the ideal that Martial Arts is for
“yourself”, he continues his martial pursuits thru teaching the core ideals
of Martial Health. |
