The Nespelen arrives at Tahiti (1956)
I was on board the USS Nespelen for over a year when we received the information that we were going to go on Operation Deepfreeze. The Nespelen had been designed for arctic duty and had a reinforced bow that helped it get through pack ice.I was twenty-two years old at the time and excited to be going on what I presumed would be the biggest adventure of my life. The following pictures are over forty years old, and I apologize for the quality, but they help to tell the story of this journey. I also might have suffered some lapses in memory and welcome any corrections.
