- Monitor SE Wisc Beaches for Piping Plovers, Summer 2006 - Summer
2007:
- Bureau of Endangered Resources of WDNR, and the
Issues Committee of the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative are
seeking several people to monitor beaches in southeastern Wisconsin
(including Kohler-Andrae State Park, Kenosha Dunes, possibly Point
Beach State Forest) for Piping Plovers during summer and early fall
2006, as well as spring and summer of 2007. There has been outstanding
reproduction of this species in Michigan this year, and 4 nests in
Wisconsin (yes, four - this is the highest number in more than 30
years). Several birds have recently been seen and well-photographed at
Manitowoc and Kohler-Andrae. This is a federally-listed and
state-listed endangered species, and protection is mandated at both
federal and state levels and must be provided.
Monitoring for plovers requires some time commitment and patience. Some
payment may be provided to defray costs for travel. If you are
interested in doing some monitoring in these areas, please contact
Sumner Matteson, Avian Ecologist, Endangered Resources, Wisconsin DNR,
