Milwaukee's Lake Park
and UEC,
Christmas
Bird Count, December 17, 2005
As of 12/29/05 Marilyn Bontly and Jean
Strelka, compilers of the Christmas Bird Count in northern Milwaukee,
officially accepted the Saw-whet owl sighting for the Christmas Bird
Count. Thanks to Dolores Knopfelmacher for leading and
documenting the search. Thanks to Dennis Casper and Vic and
Carolyn Vargo for substantiating reports.
(Paul Hunter)
as Report
by Dolores Knopfelmacher:
50 Canada Geese were migrating. For "Owling"
(about 5:00
p.m.) Saw-whet in the Locust
St.
Ravine. It kept repeating the same note
- could be 100 times per minute - but the timbre was not right. More tinny than the dulcet tone on my Audubon
tape. Too dark to see, but a shadow did
fly to the trees east and continued tooting there.
And note: NO
CROWS!
We have been in steady decline since 2000 (when we had 40)
UEC had a Belted Kingfisher.
