Mission and Benefits:

Our mission was to convert an inefficient and polluting 1997 Chevy S-10 pickup from gasoline to electric propulsion.  The goal was to have a fun and challenging father/son project that would also be beneficial to us and the environment.  Electric vehicles are much cleaner running than their gasoline counterparts as they do not burn fuel of any type and therefore produce zero emissions.  Zero emissions not only reduce air pollution, but reduce operating costs because a zero emissions vehicle is exempt from annual N.C. State emissions inspections.  Speaking of operating costs, electric vehicles also do not require: tune-ups, oil changes, or periodic replacement of belts, hoses, anti-freeze, oil filters, fuel filters, exhaust systems, or spark plugs.  On a note about pollution, many people ask: "Aren't you just transferring pollution to the power plant?"  The answer is NO.  Power to recharge your batteries may well be coming from a hydroelectric, wind, or nuclear plant, and even if your power comes from a coal or oil burning plant, you are still reducing pollution because electric vehicles are much more efficient at transferring energy to the drive wheels than gas powered vehicles (approximately, 15% vs. over 90%).  This is mainly because much of the available energy in gas is lost as heat during the combustion process.
