Detailed Info & Photos of this WebCam Project
In the woods I used an old Army surplus medical box ($35) with a rubber
seal to house the electronics (up about 14') that is used to take a Webcam
picture and transmit it approx 4 miles to a receiving station. The box is
super insulated (up to -30 below zero) with hard foam (varies
thickness's $30) leaving a cavity in the center to house an old 96 meg
pentium Toshiba laptop ( ebay $100 ), mobile Yeasu 2m rig ($120)
putting out 25 watts, a DC timer ($30) to turn
everything on and off, a PTT unit ($50) for interfacing the Chromo Pix
SSTV program ($150) to the radio, plus all the outside assemblies. Those
include a 4 amp 75 watt solar panel ($280), solar controller ($30),
12v lead acid battery plus case( $80 ), 2m home brew antennna (j-pole beam
configuration), a wee-cam web camera (parallel port ebay $9) protected in an old
plastic flash light housing ($5) . Plus all the connectors, power cables,
RG8 etc..... ($100). Add another $50-$100 for shipping costs. This setup all
sits on a 22' cedar pole to keep the bears / humans from getting their paws
on things.
Well that includes all the self supporting remote equipment that sits out on
the surface of Mars! Now on to the receiving laptop and equipment!
Unfortunately both laptops are running Win98 SE and ME. I would like to eventually
go to XP at least at the receiving end and someday to Red Hat linux. I have tried to
use the KISS philosopy ( Keep It Simple Stupid ) on this project but that's
easier said then done.
At the house we grew up in there is another home brew J-pole antenna which
feeds a yeasu VX-5R ($150 new) hand held HT that lost its transmit but
receives just fine. The audio feeds (line in or mic) another old Toshiba
laptop ($100) that is hooked to the internet via a phone line. The same
Chromo Pix SSTV program is running, waiting for any SSTV audio being
received. The program dumps the .jpg image file after it receives it to a
directory that another program (FTP widget shareware donation $10) is always
looking at. Both programs come up at boot up and run all the time. This
program (FTPwidget) then takes the file and FTP's it up to my web site at
roadrunner populating my website I have setup to display my webcam shot
of my brothers log cabin. For backup and hangups I try to boot this laptop
about every 12 hours. If the PC really hangs I have an (AC
switch/digital clock $20) in the circuit to power cycle every 12 hours
for those nasty hangs Windows is famous for! I use the scheduler that comes
with Windows to bring programs up and down etc.. I use another program
called GigAlarm ($25) to do shutdowns before power offs (on both
laptops) and also to sync the clock when dialed into my website and to
bring other programs up or down on a 24 hour clock. Thats about the size of
it. I have added a more powerful PC at the receiving end to handle
more Webcams and hopefully to add a wireless camera in the future. We keep
an eye on the old homestead, temperature etc.. since no one lives there
anymore. It's a breath of fresh air, if your work day is in the craper, to be able
to check out where you really want to be!!
