at Tri-Caucus Meeting:
The Tri-Caucus brings together members of
the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), the
Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC).
They were in Houston for the Sixth Annual Congressional Minority
Tri-Caucus Health Summit on July 19, 2008.
I also got to see on stage and hear Rep. Hilda Solis (D-CA 32nd),
sponsor of H.R. 3014, Health Equity and Accountability Act of 2007. In
between sessions, I found myself in line in the Ladies Room next to Rep.
Solis. Wow, what an opportunity! The line was long but was moving
quickly. I found myself speaking quickly, telling her I am a volunteer
RESULTS Creating the Political to End Hunger and the Worst Aspects of
Poverty, she turned and looked at me. I went on to thank her very much
for sponsoring this important piece of legislation. That several of us
from Texas were on the Hill, Tuesday (7/15) and Wednesday (7/16) of that
week asking for co-sponsors for H.R. 3014 - those Representatives from
the Houston area. That we were not only in the Democratic offices but
also the Republican offices telling them of the need for this particular
piece of legislation. She then became one of us, looked directly at me
and said she wants our organization to find more co-sponsors. I gave her
one my RESULTS cards. The courage came from my 12 years of excellent
training with RESULTS. Thanks to RESULTS, we get the training to
recognize these opportunities and discernment of when to speak straight
to the point (like when time is short) and when to add a story. What a
day!
