In & Around Blanco

Population: 1,505 --- a quiet Texas town

  • Antiques and shopping : There are many places to visit in the Historic District of Blanco if you are looking for treasures from the past. Several of my favorites are the Blanco Star or Cranberry's on the Town Square and Collector's Alley just off the Town Square on Route 163.
  • Swimming : Just outside the house you will see one of the loveliest rivers. “It’s a magical river ---- Sandy W.” Take a short stroll from the house to the swimming hole. Float away the afternoon in the cool water. Also, you can bring your canoe or kayak for an enjoyable event on the river.
  • Picnicking : Directly behind the house is an expansive park with swings. BBQ pits and picnic tables. A picnic basket and paper goods are provided at the house for your use.
  • Nature Trail : Take a stroll along the Park road next to the Blanco River. Turn onto the connection at the Nature Trail and see xeriscape gardens and the second largest oak tree in the county. It is majestic. The other end of the Nature Trail spills out onto the Town Square. The Nature Trail is dedicated to Roland and Viola Bindseil who were the original owners of the house.
  • Auction : Down the road about 10 miles south on Hwy 281 is a town called Twin Sisters. Auctions are held at least once a month and are generally on Sundays at noon.
  • Old County Courthouse : This is the centerpiece of the Town Square. This was the courthouse for the county until it was moved to Johnson City.
  • Lighting of the Court Houses : In December, several town courthouses are draped with lights for a spectacular sight. Blanco, Johnson City, and Llano all participate. The first lighting ceremony is on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
  • Trade Days : These occur on the third Saturday of each month. Booths are setup around the Courthouse for shopping. April to November. This is only three short blocks from the house. An easy stroll for a Saturday afternoon.
  • Lavender Cutting : During the summer months, the lavender is in bloom and what a sight to see. Nine lavender farms are near the house, which is why Blanco is called the Lavender Capital of Texas. Maps are provided at the house. (Visitwww.blancolavenderfest.com).
  • Massage and Spa : services can be arranged. Call for information.
  • Tours Available Nearby :
    • Wineries
    • Goat Farm
    • Pick your own fruit
  • Relaxing : Take a nap and swing in the breeze in the double hammock or on the front porch swing that is long enough to accommodate 4 people sitting (or 1 person lying down). Read a book while rocking in one of the rocking chairs. Or just sit and enjoy the beautiful view and do nothing.
