The Academy Orchestra
The Philharmonic Orchestra "Mihail Jora" of Bacau will return for a fifth year as
the host orchestra for the Advanced Conducting Academy. Founded in 1956, this highly regarded, professional
orchestra maintains a cadre of approximately 70 first-class instrumentalists. The Philharmonic has given
concerts in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Gibraltar, United States, Greece, Malta and Russia, consistently
obtaining highly acclaimed critical success. A true working orchestra, the Philharmonic presented more than
100 concerts in 2008.

The Philharmonic is pictured in the hall where all Institute rehearsals and concerts are held.
The acoustics are very responsive and work well with both small and large orchestras.
The Philharmonic's repertoire includes a broad palette of symphonic and chamber music from a large
variety of periods and musical styles. For many years, the orchestra has been invited to accompany
semifinalists and finalists in important national and international competitions for piano and violin.
Recognized for its remarkable artistic quality, the Philharmonic has been invited to record CDs with
various recording companies in Europe: Electrecord (Romania), Edi Pan, Musica Insieme (Italy), Cadence
Music Production (Germany), Belgium, as well as others.
The Bacau Philharmonic served as the core orchestra for the 2003 International Institute for Conductors in
Catania, Italy and the 2004 - 2008 International Institutes for Conductors in Bacau.
"The orchestra is great and really receptive."
- 2008 Institute critique
"I like the orchestra. I really liked working with the strings. They were very responsive."
- 2007 Institute critique
"The orchestra was friendly, eager and willing to work with us with no arrogance or stuffiness. They genuinely seemed to enjoy it as much as we did."
- 2006 Institute critique
