Caroline (Lena) ULRICH (VON KESSLINGER). Reportedly (family story), Betty Von Addams married Von Kesslinger. They had three children. Elise, George and Caroline. Betty became involved with John Ulrich, who was an employee of Von Kesslinger. Von Kesslinger granted the divorce if Betty leave, never to return, and take Caroline with her. Perhaps Caroline was never the daughter of Von Kesslinger, and was the result of the love affair between Ulrich and Betty. Regardless, John Ulrich and Betty (Von Addams) Kesslinger married and moved to America. Caroline (Lena) carried the name Ulrich after that. No adoption papers found. Parents: John J. Beatrice ULRICH (photo) was born in 1889 in NEW YORK CITY, NY. She died in 1948 in Saranac Lake, FRANKLIN, NEW YORK. Ref. 0390, 0324,

Beatrice Elizabeth (Betty) Ulrich was born in NYC in 1889. She moved to Syracuse, NY, with her family, in 1903. Once in Syracuse, she was introduced to Thomas Wallace, a railway worker, by a fellow railway worker (Jim Abert). Beatrice and Thomas married soon after. They had two children, Thomas and William. In 1912, Beatrice's husband Thomas was killed in a railroad accident. It is very unclear what happened, but family stories tell of him being crushed between two train cars. Beatrice married another man after Thomas died. I have not been able to find his full name. However, his first name is said to be "Charles" or "Charlie". He was reportedly an abusive man, and had beat Beatrice on several occasions. Beatrice divorced the man, placed her two boys (Thomas and William) in an orphanage, and traveled to Saranac Lake to work as a cook and housekeeper for Edmond Guggenheim at his summer home on Lower Saranac Lake. Once established, Beatrice sent for her two boys. It was here in Saranac Lake where she stayed and raised her sons. Family stories tell of a romance that developed between she and the caretaker of the Guggenheim estate (Herb Williams). However, nothing formal ever developed, and I am unable to verify this story outside of the family. Herb Williams played a significant role teaching the two Wallace boys (Tom and Bill) how to hunt, fish and live in the Adirondack Mountains. Parents: John J. ULRICH and Betty ADDAMS.
