Wanda Richards, the YA author of 'summer of
dolores' and the soon-to-be released 'educación linda' interviewed me.
Here are some of the highlights of the interview:
WANDA: Leigh, I've had the pleasure of reading Zebulon and I
understand it's to be published almost any day from The Wild Rose Press.
LEIGH: Yes, Wanda, I'm very pleased to see it go to press since it
takes place in Richmond, Virginia where I grew up.
WANDA: That's right. After reading the book I really would like to visit the
Fan District of Richmond. I could just imagine taking walks along
those tree-lined streets with the colorful gardens and the regal
Victorian architecture. I really liked your heroine who spends her
days combing antique shops looking for things to furnish her home.
LEIGH: Well, that's true, but by profession Abigail is an accomplished
novelist and historian. In fact, in the story Zebulon spies Abigail as
she is writing one of her books and falls in love with her.
WANDA: Yes, I remember it well since at one point in the story Abigail
is again hard at work when Zebulon serenades her.
LEIGH: (Laughing.) Yes, he sings her a Stephen Foster song that was
written in the 1820s. Being a historian, Abigail recognizes the tune
and even though she's angry at him lets him in the house to grill him
on how he knew the tune and lyrics of such an old tune.
WANDA: Right. At that point, Abigail doesn't know he's a ghost.
LEIGH: True. Abigail doesn't believe in the supernatural and gets very
angry at Zeb for his antics.
WANDA: That leads me to one of the most intriguing parts of the book.
It appears that Abigail and her aunt and her grandmother, I believe,
have a rare familial trait.
LEIGH: Yes, when women reach menopause many chemical changes take
place. In Abigail's family, some of the women develop the ability to
see spirits who roam the earth.
WANDA: And Zebulon is one of them that is walking the earth. I have to
tell you that I loved this part of the book, but I'm not sure I should
reveal all of Zebulon's secrets here.
LEIGH: That's right. Just be patient. Zebulon will be available at The
Wild Rose Press very soon.
