DRAG THE BAYS!
If you have dragged your Bay, let me see your timeslips, or let me know what track, and what numbers
you put down, and I'll send you a special, limited edition Drag The Bays sticker. It looks just
like the graphic you got here with.
Save The Bays is proud to participate in the "continuing legend" of
HotVWs Drag Day
at Irwindale Dragstrip,
located in beautiful Irwindale, CA. This is an 1/8 mile track, ideally suited to VW drag racing.
STB was there in March 2002, ready to take the '69 Westy for a romp. Alas, I was wearing short pants,
and they didn't let me on the track. I offered to swap pants with one of the lovely lady track officials,
but was again denied! I didn't even get my $15 back...
September 2002. Not to be thwarted by the previous event, I came to Drag Day wearing pants(!).
There were 7 classes of brackets. But, no bus class! I had to run in the most popular class - T2 - with 68
Bugs/Ghias/T3s/etc, and one bus, participating. As fate would have it, the '69 Westy comes out on top!
First Race. First win.
March 2003. STB once again shows up to rub elbows. What's this? They made a Bus class!
Ahhh, just for me? How nice. There were 7 buses (!) ready to go. One thing you can't relay is
the crowd's reaction to the buses. They adore the buses! I take the Bus class win!
I lose in the second round of Final Eliminations.
Second race. Second win.
August 2003. The fires made for some red skies, and a low turnout.
Soot in the air, and perhaps 100 racers total. STBs takes the bus class win,
edging out Bill Mortimer's beautiful panel camper Bay.
The '69 Westy has problemsn and loses in the first round of eliminations.
Third race. Third win.
March 2005. The '69 Westy has a new 2110 motor, ready to race! What? Where's the
competition? Nobody showed up for the bus class! STBs (obviously) takes the Bus class win.
STBs makes it to The Final against Mike Sheldon (one of the nicest guys you'll ever
meet - BTW). We both break-out, but Sheldon breaks-out by .02 seconds less,
taking the win. STBs got second place of the day with a $300 purse! The '69
Westy runs 0-60 in 11.6 seconds consistently! Not bad for the tall gearing (80mph
in 3rd gear @ 6K rpm!). I retire the '69 Westy from drag racing. Point proven.
It's the winningest vehilce in Drag Day since the event came back.
Fourth race. Fourth win.
October 2005. I bring the '87 Westy. There's three other buses in the class. STBs
takes the Bus class win. Reaction times are awesome! I take the first race of
the final elimination rounds. One more race and I'm in The Final. I REDLIGHT! My
first ever red light... that hurts.
Fifth race. Fifth win.
March 2006. I once again took the '87 Westy.
I'm proud to report that there were 5 buses that came to race!
I was #6, so I decided to race in the WaterPumper class - trying to get two Buses in the finals!
I was Top Gun in the practice rounds with a .722 and .610 Reaction times,
so I WAS READY. The weather was not, the event got rained out.
So we went home without a trophy - this time.
