I enjoy listening to music a lot, but I have a hard time describing
what I like. Much of it is hard to categorize, but for the
most part I think of it as intricate, complex, interesting, and
sometimes unusual and, without being disrespectful to other tastes,
sophisticated. I like music in various genres, classical-like, modern
jazz, rock, metal, techno, and combinations of them.
I like to listen to music while resting or sleeping. I find it all relaxing,
even the rock and metal.
Below is a list the artists that I enjoy most. If you like some of these
but are unfamiliar with others, you might check them out.
- Incubus.Alternative rock,
"Lyrically intelligent and musically gifted"
- Baby Mammoth. This is
"ambient". Beautiful. I discovered them and others in the
techno-ambient genre a couple years ago (2002), via Internet
radio. Instrumental.
- Talvin Singh. I've only recently
discovered him too (2002), via Internet radio. Beautiful combination
of fast and slow lines/cords, with Indian-styles mixed with others. I
guess this is techno-based too. Instrumental.
- Beanfield. More ambiant. I enjoy
most of what is played on groove salad internet radio, www.somafm.com which often includes
some Beanfield, Talvin Singh, and Baby Mammoth.
- The Beta Band. Kind of hypnotic.
Very interesting lyrics, in a dream-like manner. For example, "Taking
pictures of my soul; All the angles no-one could know; I thought an
eagle was seeing thru my eyes; I thought everybody turning into spies;
Reassures the only aim of my life; Please reassure me that I'm doing
alright; (here's a link to that song's (It's
Over) lyrics)
- Tori Amos. Amazing stuff, beautiful
and interesting both musically and lyrically. But how would you
accurately classify her work? I like most of her albums except the
most recent (2002).
- Rush. Also wonderful stuff, the
music, lyrics, and performance. I'd have to list most of the albums
and most of the songs as real favorites. The lyrics are meaningful
and resonate with me, for example, see Lyrics for The Weapon
(Part II of Fear), in part: "Like a steely blade in a silken
sheath We don't see what they're made of They shout about love, but
when push comes to shove They live for the things they're afraid of
And the knowledge that they fear is a weapon to be used against
them..." All except the earliest and most recent (2002) are terrific.
Giddy Lee's "My Favorite Headache" was excellent too.
- Metallica. I enjoy almost everything
they have done.
- Tool. Powerful music and lyrics.
-
Moby.Wonderful stuff. How would you classify it tho? It would be
techno because he uses modern mechanisms to produce some of it, but blends
many styles and genres together. Each song is unique.
- Jethro Tull. For many years.
- Pink Floyd.
For many years. "Dark Side of the Moon" is just specticular.
- Philip Glass.
Much of his work I find to be really quite
beautiful. It is often slow-paced, but moving.
- Bach.
Years ago especially.
- Mike Oldfield.
Much of his work I have enjoyed a great deal.
- Alice In Chains.
- KMFDM.Interesting Metal/techno (I
guess I'd call it), interesting lyrics. Check out 'Dogma' lyrics
which include: "Sex, drugs, god, cash, America" and "You are more than
the sum of what you consume, Desire is not an occupation" and "We fear
that pop-culture Is the only culture we're ever going to have, We want
to stop reading magazines, Stop watching TV, Stop caring about
hollywood, But we're addicted to the things we hate, We don't run
washington and no one really does"
- Fatboy Slim.
Beautiful techno.
- God Lives Underwater.
This is kind of a weird metal sound; beautiful.
-
Queensryche.
Especially the albums "Operation Mindcrime", "Hear in
the Now Frontier", "Promised Land", and "Q2K".
- Radiohead.
This too, I don't know how to describe, but it's terrific.
- Gravity Kills.
- Pearl Jam.
- Al Di Meola.
Especially the albums "Kiss My Axe" and "Elegant Gypsy". What would you
call his work, jazzy-spanish?
- Garbage.
- Jesus Christ Superstar.
The rock opera. I enjoy both the music and
the lyrics/story very much.
- Jean-Luc Ponty.
- Dave Matthews Band.
- Led Zepplin.
Years ago, especially.
- Santana. For many years. And his
recent "Supernatural" is terrific. What would you call this,
jazzy-rock-blues-spanish?
- Van Halen.
I like a lot of their music, somewhat.
- Joe Satriani.
Especially, "Engines of Creation". Instrumental. This is rock, but very
sophisticated/intricate rock. Wonderful stuff.
- Yes.
Years ago, especially.
- Yanni.
"Optimystique" is pretty good, the rest of his work that
I have heard, I haven't cared for much.
- Spyro Gyra.
Modern jazz.
- Yellow Jackets.
Modern jazz.
- Alice Cooper.
Years ago.
