Anguilla (Ann-GWIL-A)

|
Anguilla is the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, and is 6 miles to the north of St. Martin. The name 'Anguilla' means 'eel' which describes it's long, thin shape. The island is about 16 miles long and 3 miles wide, with one main road that threads through picturesque villages, rows of cottages, and colorful fruit and vegetable stands. Scattered along its craggy coast are 30 white sand beaches.
The island is low lying and, unlike its larger sisters, it is not volcanic but of coral formation. It is arid, covered with low scrub and has few natural resources. However, it has excellent beaches and superb diving and snorkelling, protected by the coral reefs.
Until 1971Anguilla was a British dependency, when, after a bloodless revolt, it was allowed to secede and became a separate British dependency which was formally recognized in 1980.
