The Caribbean and the Bahamas

Our philosophy on Caribbean travel (besides doing it often) is to not use cruise ships, not go to islands which can accommodate wide-body jets, do eat local food in local restaurants, do stay in locally-owned hotels/villas/etc., swim/snorkel/scuba as much as possible, circle the island on a sailboat if possible, hike through the rain forests and thoroughly absorb the island.

The islanders are friendly, clean, industrious and proud.  The children are a delight. You are safe anywhere at any time.  You can drink the water.  Their bubbly, dialectic language is hard to catch onto, but it is "no problem, mon".
