ST's Intro:
Before there were mouthy
know-it-all sportswriters writing blogs, there were humble and
intelligent fans attending practices and sharing their observations and
UH pictures with other fans. They did it on their own time — and dime —
and, most of all, for the love of all things UH. They had online names
like Isleboy and Nelson O and BowStock, and they spawned Web sites such
as sportshawaii.com and rainbowsportsnetwork.com (now
warriorsportsnetwork.com). And they broke stories — on recruiting, on
injuries, etc. One of the pioneers was BigWave96744, who still spends
his free time providing biographies of UH players culled from news
reports and personal observations. Here's BigWave's autobiography:
Name: BigWave96744
Number: #1
Class: Senior
Position: SB
HT/WT: 6’ 0’’ / 225 lbs
College: UH Manoa, BS in ICS
Prep: CASO, I mean Castle High. Older and way less smarter than Garrett
Personal: Married to BigWaveWifey, One son (LittleWave), and one more
in the forecast. Or as Guy Hagi would say, “Swell is coming in a few
weeks”. In fact the way the summer has been going, NewWave will be here
before any swell over 4 feet hits the South Shore
Fun Facts:
- #1 is my usual bball jersey number. It also represents the number of
points per season, you can expect from me
- Entering my 4th year of Fatherhood, thus the Senior Class. No I’m not
a Senior Citizen
- I had a dream that June would always see me at Practice. He told me I
could walkon as a Slot Back if I completed the 220’s drills. With the
team cheering me on I ran and ran and ran, and after completing one I
puked and quit. So for now my position is “Sit Back” and watch from the
Hill.
- I’m actually 5’4’’, 148 lbs but what’s few inches and pounds between
friends
- UH Football fan since the 80’s watching Castle Boys Alvis Satele and
Aui Fatisemanu. Season Ticket fan since June became coach.
- Forum Moderator of SportsHawaii.Com
- “Dave from Kaneohe” on KKEA and “BigWave” on KUMU
- Favorite teams: Hawaii (of course), Yankees, Dolphins, Sixers, North
Carolina BBall, Florida St Football
- Very active at First Assembly of God, Honolulu
- Competed in the Hawaii Amateur Surfing Scene for 20 years (in the
Kneeboard Division)
- 10 time State Champ, 2 time U.S. Champ, on 5 World Surfing Games
Hawaiian Team (from 1994 – 2002) winning a Bronze Medal in ’96.
- Blessed to have ridden waves in Cali, Japan, Brazil, Portugal, and
South Africa
- Longest Wave Ridden – Jefferey’s Bay, South Africa
- Safest Place to surf: Shikoku, Japan (Wallet on the dash, camera
hanging on the mirror, boards on the roof, doors unlocked… Dodobou Nai)
- Scariest Place to surf: Durban, South Africa (Muggings and Car
Jacking are a daily occurrence and 1 out of every 3 is said to have
AIDS)
- Best Place to Surf: the 7 mile wonder stretch called, “THE NORTH
SHORE”
