Automobile Trading Secrets
Hello, My name is Bill Herndon. I have over 30 years experience as a professional automobile dealer. I have compiled a book of tips which can save you grief and money when trading vehicles.
This book, Auto Tips, is intended to be of value to anyone who is trading in an automobile or truck on another vehicle, new or used. This book is written with you, the buyer in mind. If you will read it through at least once, and note the points which seem to be applicable to you, study and understand them, then I can truthfully say, this information will be very valuable to you.
I have included the things you should look for in the next vehicle you buy, and I also want to help create confidence in yourself when trading. You are not inferior to the salesperson and many times you know more about the car you are buying than they do. That might be hard to accept but it is true. You'll find out as you read this book. On the other hand, don't try to intimidate the salesperson. Ask for their help and assistance.
Read, study, and assimulate the information in this book. It will be very valuable to you.
CHAPTER 1
DO I REALLY NEED TO TRADE ?I want to ask you a question....... How many times have you heard the old saying, "I wish I had never traded cars. I had a better one before I traded" No doubt, many times. If those same people had it all to do over, would they still trade? Yes !!.. It's the same old story: Keeping up with the Jones's or simply keeping current. If a vehicle is paid for, it's like an extra dollar in their pocket, burning a hole. So it's off to the used car alley or the new car showroom where they will find plenty of professional help in making up their minds. You know what that means. They will wonder how your car ever made it to the dealership in the first place.
Now there are times when you must trade. The old vehicle is just not worth the money you are investing in it's upkeep. But you should decide for sure just what you want to accomplish before you leave your driveway.
Take advantage of the free estimates given by any reputable garage. Find out just how good or bad your vehicle really is. How much will repairs cost? How long can I expect it to last after the repairs? What are it's general uses?.... A fishing car doesn't have to look nice and clean.
Some people just aren't satisfied unless they own a new car. Now think about that for a moment. The only people who own new cars are the new car dealers. Once you sign your name to the application for title, your new car becomes a used car. You bought it new but once you started driving it, it became used. If you don't believe me, try selling it as a new car.
Perhaps you think your gas mileage is unsatisfactory. My old car only gets about 25 miles per gallon so I'll just trade it in on one that gets 30 mpg. STOP!! How do you know the one you are going to buy is actually going to get 30 mpg? If in fact, it does, how many gallons of gasoline must you save at 5 miles more per gallon to equal your new car payment? Take a pen and do a little figuring. You'll be surprised.
What I'm saying is this: If your old car runs good, looks good and isn't frequently breaking down, you are a lot better off financially to not trade. BUT...Since people are going to question this, I felt I should write the rest of this book to help you get the most money for your vehicle whether you're buying a new or used vehicle.
30 YEARS EXPERIENCE
During the past 30 years and I have heard many, many reasons for trading. Not all of them were bad. Some were pretty good. Especially the divorced woman who had to have a different car so her former husband couldn't keep track of her. (Or Vice versa) One thing I have learned: If someone wants to trade, they will trade regardless of what somebody else tries to tell them. The easiest sales I've made have been the times I tried to talk someone out of buying a particular car. Many times I tried this, I wound up selling the car I tried to talk them out of buying. The more I told them they didn't want it, the more they said, YES I DO.. Reverse psychology or whatever.... sometimes it pays to listen... listen... listen... then buy.
