One corner of the Spiritual Renewal Center is home to a retail enterprise called the Hand to Hand Gift Shop. The shop features goods designed and made by third world artisans and craftsman, and made available in local markets by Ten Thousand Villages and A Greater Gift. Featured are many gift items including musical instruments, cards and journals, candleholders, brass and wood items including bookends, bowls and trinket boxes. Also included in the stock is a wide variety of jewelry items. We also feature handmade candles made locally by members of the L’Arche Community. L'Arche is an international federation of faith communities where developmentally disabled adults and others live together in the spirit of the Beatitudes.
The shop has a two-fold mission. By purchasing the goods and raising awareness of third world artisans and fair trade, we support these craftsmen materially. In addition, a portion of the profit of the shop is donated back to the Spiritual Renewal Center to further its ministry.
The shop is run entirely by volunteer staff and is open regular Center hours. Questions or comments about the shop should be directed to Judy Carr at the Center.
A Note From Our Gift Shop Manager, Judy Carr …
As always, most of us are scratching our heads and asking, “where did the summer go”? That is exactly what I did last week when the Fall/Christmas catalogue arrived from one of our suppliers, A Greater Gift. But my discouragement turned to delight when I saw all the beautiful and unique items they are stocking that I will be able to purchase for the shop and offer to YOU! I also plan on expanding our product lines this fall by purchasing from Mayan Hands which focuses on Central and South American crafts, particularly the bright multicolored textiles and accessories that are the trademark of these crafters.
We are always pleased when you come in to the Center and shop so keep in mind that the shop is open whenever the Center is. If you think your worship community might be interested in spreading the Fair Trade message by hosting a sale, give the Center a call and a brochure can be sent to you.
Word to the wise shopper: many items become unavailable to us as they go out of stock as the season progresses. Please don’t assume I will be able to get something later on. We have had a lot of disappointed customers who have done that in the past. Please shop early so you are not left out!
Happy Shopping and as always thank you for supporting Fair Trade and the Spiritual Renewal Center.
