Village Projects
August 2009Team members who are traveling on the August 09 trip are:
Malaria Research: Cooperative effort with Team Rafiki, the New York State Department of Health, and the Tanzanian Ministry of Heath to performs hands on testing of children in the village to determine malaria prevalence and drug susceptibility as the first step in securing assistance to fight this deadly disease. Mill:
This
is a project for Kisele village men. TR purchased a mill and associated legs and
generator to mill corn and cassava as an income generating project. TR will
educate men on use and repair of mill, assist with basic process, then turn the
operation over to men at team’s departure. There are only 2 milling machines
in the area, currently they are operating 24/7, so this has good potential.
Villagers now need to pay bus fare to reach a town or the other village about 7
miles away to mill their corn and cassava. Medical Clinic: Daily medical care and treatment to villagers provided by medically trained Team Rafiki members. We expect to serve the needs of more than 1000 people on this trip. Health Fair: Full day educational workshops held for the villagers. Topics include:
Bathroom construction at Tumaine: 2 for boys, 2 for girls. This school’s current facility is very dilapidated and unsanitary, mud floor teeming with bacteria and parasites. Olympics
Day: Two
sessions, one at Tumaine, one at Kizuga schools. Goals are teaching teamwork,
dehydration lesson, skill development, and just having fun with the children. Feminine
Pad Project: Continue
this self sustaining project to Kitonga, Tumaine and Kizuga schools. We will
seek assistance from village women who participated in this Nov 2008 project,
with the women passing their knowledge to the school aged girls.
