"Night, the beloved. Night, when words fade and things come alive. When the destructive analysis of day is done, and all that is truly important becomes whole and sound again. When man reassembles his fragmentary self and grows with the calm of a tree." -Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

"Perhaps I am doomed to retrace my steps under the illusion that I am exploring, doomed to try and learn what I should simply recognize, learning a mere fraction of what I have forgotten." -André Breton

Photographer's Statement: These photographs were taken in 2008 during an extended stay in Nepal. I decided to photograph Kathmandu at night because, as far as I know, it had not been done before. Almost all of these photos were taken without flash, using only existing light.

I take pictures of what exists, without staging or manipulation. Yet these images also contain a significant element of subjectivity. I consciously strove to compose and edit as an expression of my personal experience as a curious visitor passing through a complex and ultimately elusive culture. In Nepal, I found that my self-concept, and the concept other people had of me, went through a perpetual and surprising reassembling and redefining. Instead of resisting the inevitability of that process, I found that giving in to it led to a more honest exploration of the society around me as well as the recognition of fragments of myself reflected in it.
