Our 2005 Lenten Journey
The word “Lent” comes to us from the Old
English word, “lencten,” which means the time of lengthening days, or
“Springtime.” Each year we have the
opportunity to make the six weeks of Lent a springtime in our hearts, a time of
conversion and transformation both as individuals and as fully engaged members
of a faith community. The Lenten Season
is our preparation for the celebration of the Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday,
Good Friday, Holy Saturday). Here is a
list of parish events and activities for the Season of Lent, 2005:
ASH WEDNESDAY MASSES will be celebrated at 7:30 AM and 7:00 PM
on February 9th. (Ashes will be distributed in the context of Mass.)
WEEKEND EUCHARIST will be celebrated at
5:00 PM (Sat.) and 8:45 and 11:30 AM (Sun.)
WEEKDAY EUCHARIST will be celebrated at
7:30 AM Monday through Friday, except for the
first three Fridays of Lent, when
the 7 PM Mass follows the Fish Dinner.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:
SEE “EXTRA CONFESSIONS,”
“STATIONS OF THE CROSS,”
“RICE BOWL” and “PALM RECYCLING” on the other side of this
sheet!

INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS FOR THE SACRAMENT OF
PENANCE (CONFESSION) will be provided as usual on Saturday afternoons beginning
at 4:15 PM and ending when all have been heard.
EXTRA “LAST MINUTE” CONFESSIONS BEFORE
EASTER: Monday, March 21 at 7:00
PM. Confessions
will begin at the scheduled time and end when all have been heard. Please arrive at 7:00 PM. Inasmuch as Lent ends around sundown on Holy
Thursday, all pre-Easter confessions should take place before that time.
CATHOLIC PRACTICE DURING THE SEASON OF
LENT: “Ash Wednesday, February 9, 2005 and Good Friday,
March 25, 2005 are days of abstinence from meat and also days of fast, that is
limited to a single full meal. The
Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. The practice of abstinence from meat during Lent applies to those
14 years of age and older, the practice of fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday applies to those who have celebrated their 18th birthday
until their 59th birthday. Whereas
the obligation to do penance is serious, including the observation of Catholic
penitential practice, scrupulosity in this regard is to be avoided, and the
failure to observe an individual day of penance is not considered gravely
sinful.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS can be celebrated
privately or in small groups whenever the church is open. This is especially encouraged for
families. Numerous styles of “Stations
of the Cross” booklets will be available in a basket on the Gathering Room
table.
OPERATION RICE BOWL: The Rice Bowl program,
which has been observed at Saint Victor Parish for several years, is highly
encouraged. More information on
Operation Rice Bowl will be found in the bulletin.
PALM RECYCLING: Blessed palms from previous years should be
recycled in some respectful way. They
should not be included with the usual household waste. Options include burning or composting
blessed palms from previous years.
Inasmuch as transforming burnt palm into useful ashes for Ash Wednesday
is extremely difficult and time consuming, we will not be collecting old palms
this year.
LENT ENDS around sundown on Holy Thursday. Lent is the way the Church prepares for Easter, and the
celebration of Easter is the Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy
Saturday). The Sacred Triduum is
the highest point in the liturgical year of the Church, and consists of
the Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Thursday 3/24 at 7:30 PM), the Celebration of
the Passion of the Lord (Friday 3/25 at 3 and 7:30 PM) and the Easter Vigil
(Saturday 3/26 at 8:00 PM).
THE SACRED TRIDUMM (“THREE DAYS”): There will be
another information sheet, like this one, regarding the Sacred Triduum, in the
near future. In short, the rites of the
Catholic Church on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the most
important of the entire year. A
Catholic person who wishes to celebrate Easter in unity with the entire
Catholic Church will participate in all three days of the Triduum.
