GENERAL INFORMATION
Registration
Please contact the Religious Education Office to register a new
student. All families wishing to
register their children in the Parish School of Religion (PSR)
and Junior Youth Ministry (JYM) Program must first be
registered with the parish. PSR/JYM Registration packets will be mailed in May of each
year to families of returning students.
Registration packets consist of:
a Registration Form, Emergency Medical Authorization Form (one for each
child) and a Parent Commitment Form. The
Religious Education Office requires that an Emergency Medical Form be on file
for each child in the program. Please
contact the Religious Education Office if this form needs to be updated. If your child becomes ill or needs emergency
attention during PSR/JYM class, the parent or
guardian listed on the Emergency Medical Form will be contacted.
Fees
The fee for the 2007-2008 PSR/JYM
Program is $60.00 per student. There is
an additional Sacramental Fee for grades 2 and 8 of $25.00 per student and an
additional Bible Fee for grade 5 of $10.00 per student. All fees are payable before the first PSR/JYM session, however, no child will be denied a place
in the program due to financial difficulty.
Please contact the Religious Education Office if you have questions or
concerns regarding fees.
Textbooks
Children from grades Pre-K thru 6 will use pages from the
textbook according to the class syllabus.
Gospel Weeklies will also be distributed weekly for grades Pre-K thru
6. Each child in grade 5 will be issued
a St. Joseph Edition of the New American Bible. Grades 6, 7 and 8 will use the
NAB Catholic Youth Bible. JYM students will be issued
materials, including student workbooks from the “Discovering Program”.
Parental Involvement
Parent volunteers are always needed in various areas of our
Religious Education and Youth Ministry Programs. If you are interested in becoming a
catechist, substitute catechist, classroom aid, hall monitor or adult table
leader (JYM grades 7 & 8), please contact the
Religious Education Office or meet with Mary Reboudo during PSR. All adult volunteers are required to complete
the VIRTUS Program (Protecting God’s Children) and
have current fingerprinting and background check on file in the Religious
Education Office.
As parents, you are the primary teachers of your children, and
family faith formation is essential for spiritual growth. Participation in Mass and PSR/JYM
sessions is also an important part of your child’s on-going faith
development. Please make an effort to
attend regularly. It is also important
to take time each week to review with your child any materials that are sent
home. Materials may include: important
memos, lessons covered that week, and “Family Time” sheets or homework to be
completed. This is a great way to
reinforce concepts covered in class and stay informed as parents. In the event that your child is absent from a
scheduled class, please ask the catechist for lessons missed so that they can
be completed at home.
Student Involvement
Students benefit greatly by actively participating in scheduled PSR/JYM sessions, liturgies, Children’s Liturgy of the
Word, Church social events and service projects. Each child is blessed with special gifts and
should be encouraged to share them with the Parish Community.
The behavior of every PSR/JYM student
should reflect Christian values. All
students are expected to be courteous and respectful toward teachers and other
students at all times. Each catechist
will set behavioral guidelines for his or her classroom which students will be
expected to follow. Parents will be
notified of any behavioral problems that cannot be resolved in the
classroom. Students are also expected to
respect the property of
Entrance and Dismissal
Procedure
Students in grades K – 8 are to enter and leave
Students in Pre-K are to enter and leave the lower level of the
rectory via the Religious Education Office.
Parents are asked to come into the building when dropping off and
picking up their child to assure their safety.
If it is necessary for a child to leave PSR
early, a signed note from the parent or guardian must be given to the catechist
and the child will be dismissed at the appropriate time.
PSR/JYM Cancellation
In the event that PSR/JYM is cancelled
due to inclement weather, power failures, or any other unforeseen reason,
families will be notified by phone. An
announcement will also be made at the 8:45 Mass. Cancellations will not be on TV. We will do our best to see that every family
is contacted ASAP.
CURRICULUM
St. Victor Parish School of Religion and Youth Ministry is
dedicated to partnering with the families of our parish community, as they
strive to enrich the faith life of their children and young teens. The Parish School of Religion and Youth
Ministry Program will support these efforts by providing a quality religious
education for the children and teens of our parish, rich in the faith and
traditions of the Roman Catholic Church.
Our parish staff and volunteers are committed to sharing the message of
the Gospel through Christian example, prayer study and service. It is our hope that together we can build a
strong foundation for our families, one that will inspire a deeper love for the
Lord and continued growth in the knowledge and practice of our Catholic faith.
Pre-School
Our Pre-School program, “I AM SPECIAL” (Age 4) by Our Sunday
Visitor, is taught by Miss Diane Nagy.
This religious-education program is designed to help young children at
the preschool level to discover their special qualities and importance in God’s
creation. The primary focus of the
program is to assist them in developing positive self-concepts through an awareness that God has made each of them very
special. Their positive self-concepts
are supportive foundations for developing the Christian attitudes of loving,
helping, sharing, and also for developing a relationship with a loving God.
“I AM SPECIAL” provides learning experiences based on the
preschool child’s level of understanding and ability to participate. Through the media of stories, songs, finger
plays, games, dramatizations, lesson-related prayer, and sensorial activities,
children can sense God’s love for them.
Above all, a pleasant relationship between teacher and children in a
religion class not only exemplifies God’s love but also aids the children in
forming patterns of social behavior and Christian attitudes toward others.
Grades K through 6
Our program for grades Kindergarten through 6 is “BLEST ARE WE” by
Silver Burdett Ginn
Religion. Parish, family, and catechist
make up the indispensable “we” that constitutes the community of faith. This program is designed to strengthen the
partnership of home, parish community, and catechesis. “BLEST ARE WE” sees the whole parish as the
place where the life of faith is nurtured.
Our Catholic faith tradition and its foundational elements are the basis
for the scope and sequence of the program.
The doctrine is organized according to the four pillars of The Catechism
of the Catholic Church which are belief, worship, morality and prayer. Scripture is foundational and interwoven
throughout the program. Each part of the
learning process is grounded in Scripture and prompts reflection and prayer.
Adult faith formation and evangelization have taken precedence on
our Bishops’ pastoral agenda. In
response, Silver Burdett Ginn Religion developed
“FAMILY TIME” into the “BLEST ARE WE” program to assist parents in raising
family consciousness about God’s presence in the stuff of everyday life. “FAMILY TIME” sheets will be sent home regularly.
“Gospel Weeklies” by Pflaum will be
incorporated in the curriculum for grades K - 6. The weekly periodical format features lessons
that connect Gospel values to issues that concern us today, including a focus
on Christian service. “Gospel Weeklies”
are age appropriate so children can hear the Word at their own level.
In addition to the “BLEST ARE WE” program, second grade
catechists will be using the “GIFTS OF A LIFETIME” program by Silver Burdett Ginn Religion to prepare the children for the Sacraments of
First Reconciliation and First Communion.
The catechetical method in this program finds its inspiration in the
experience of receiving a gift.
Receptivity to the gift is central and essential to our
discipleship. “GIFTS OF A LIFETIME”
provides the children with an age-appropriate understanding of the gifts they
are about to receive in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
Junior
Youth Ministry (Grades 7 and 8)
Our program for Grades 7 & 8 is “DISCOVERING” by Saint Mary’s
Press and will be facilitated by Mrs. Elizabeth Brown. The “DISCOVERING” Program offers an
innovative approach to junior high religious education. The Program offers short courses that can be
“mixed and matched” to build a curriculum, rather than relying on the usual
semester or yearlong textbook-based courses.
Each of the fourteen Discovering courses is designed to be taught in
just six 1-hour sessions. Parishes can
select from among the available courses to create a scope and sequence that
meet their needs.
We chose to cover twelve courses over a two-year period. Year “A” covers the following topics: Becoming Friends, Being Catholic, Growing Up Sexually, Exploring the Story of Israel, Seeking Justice
and Gathering to Celebrate. Year “B”
covers the following topics:
Understanding Myself, Learning to Communicate, Meeting Jesus,
Celebrating the Eucharist and Making Decisions.
Sections from the course on Prayer are integrated throughout the year
and at retreats. This year we will be
covering the topics from year “B”. The
subject matter covered in this two-year cycle is key
in the preparation of teens for the Sacrament of Confirmation. A JYM retreat for
Grades 7 and 8 and a Confirmation retreat for Grade 8 will be part of
curriculum.
Students will receive a Discovering booklet for each course that
serves as a workbook and journal. These
booklets consist primarily of small-group exercises and personal reflection
material that compliment the active learning process being guided by the
facilitator with the help of adult table leaders.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is celebrated on Sunday at the
11:30 Mass during the PSR/JYM year. The CLW is for
children ages 4 (Pre-K) thru 9 (Gr. 4).
Teams of catechists, parents, and teens will gather to lead the
Children’s Liturgy of the Word in the Gathering Room. There will be a CLW
schedule posted in the Gathering Room.
If you are interested in participating in CLW,
please sign up when the schedule is announced and posted. Please check the bulletin for your scheduled
date and time of
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION
First Penance (Second Grade)
Catechists will
begin preparing second grade students for the Sacrament of Reconciliation
directly following the Christmas Break.
A combination of texts from “BLEST ARE WE” and “THE GIFT OF
RECONCILIATION” will be used to help the children appreciate the wonderful gift
of God’s forgiveness. Children will be
learning the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes to use for an examination of
conscience before confession and a prayer of sorrow to be said during
confession.
As a parent of
a child who is preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the
first time, you are invited to experience with your child the gifts of joy,
peace, forgiveness, and new life that God offers through Jesus in this
sacrament. It is through you that your
child learns to relate to God and others. Your example of being open to
receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation yourself will help your child value
the gift of God’s forgiveness.
Children
preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time will
meet at the church to view the confessional with Fr. Corrigan. At this time, Fr. Corrigan will also walk the
children through the Rite of Reconciliation and allow them to practice. Please see the Second Grade Sacramental
Schedule and the PSR/JYM Schedules for dates and
times of First Penance, parent meetings and special events.
First Communion (Second
Grade)
Catechists will
begin preparing second grade students for the sacrament of First Communion
after they receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. A combination of the texts from “BLEST ARE
WE” and “THE GIFT OF EUCHARIST” will be used to prepare the children for the
reception of God’s greatest gift – Jesus Christ – in the Eucharist.
Through the
Sacrament of Baptism, your child was welcomed to new life in God’s family. Just as Baptism began your child’s initiation
in the faith, preparing for First Eucharist continues this process as your
child matures and grows in understanding and relationship with God, your family
and the world. Through lessons in the
text, children will gain an awareness that the Eucharist, under the appearances
of bread and wine, is the real Body and Blood of Christ. They will gain a basic understanding that at
Mass we praise and thank God for his goodness.
Parents can
help their children prepare for the Sacrament of Eucharist by encouraging them
to participate actively in the celebration of the
Children
preparing to receive the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time will meet
with Fr. Corrigan in the church to practice.
Fr. Corrigan will walk them through the celebration of First Eucharist
and let them sample a host and some wine.
Please see the Second Grade Sacramental Schedule and the PSR/JYM Schedules for dates and times of the Sacrament of
First Communion, parent meetings and special events.
Confirmation (Eighth
Grade)
The Sacrament
of Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation - Baptism,
Eucharist, and Confirmation. The word
initiation refers to the formal process of joining an organization or a chosen
way of life. Together these three
Sacraments initiate Catholics into an ever growing relationship with Christ and
his Church.
Through
Baptism, we are reborn as we receive the grace of the Holy Spirit for the first
time. We are born to a new life in
faith. Confirmation completes the grace
of Baptism. In Confirmation we receive a
special strengthening of the Holy Spirit, which seals or perfects the grace of
Baptism. Confirmation, as it is in
Baptism, is so powerful that it imprints us with a special spiritual mark, or
character. That is why Confirmation,
like Baptism, can be received only once.
Parents can
help their children prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation by encouraging
them to participate actively in scheduled JYM sessions,
retreats, liturgies and special events.
Please encourage your child to participate actively in the
following: Blanket Making (in the church
hall), Communion of Saints Party, Thanksgiving Mass, JYM
Bake Sale, JYM Ash Wednesday Soup Supper, Communal
Penance Service, JYM Grades 7 & 8 Retreat and
Confirmation Retreat.
Each
Confirmation candidate is also asked to volunteer their time at
