(50) IM Jesse Kraai (2497) - Paul Fricano (1927) [A04]
NM Open, Open Section (3), 29.10.2005
[RM/JNB]

RM: Black never gets his forces coordinated. 1.Nf3 f5 2.d3 Nf6 3.e4 JB: Have to admit up front that I'm not very familiar with this opening, but (almost) everything has been played before. This follows Lisicin-Mikenas in the 1934 USSRChampionship! 3...d6 [JB: The previously mentioned game continued 3...fxe4 4.dxe4 Nxe4 5.Bd3 d5 6.Bxe4 dxe4 7.Qxd8+ Kxd8 8.Ng5 Ke8 9.Bf4 Bf5 10.Nc3 e5 11.Bxe5 Nd7 12.Bd4 Bb4 13.0-0-0 with advantage to White.] 4.e5 dxe5 5.Nxe5 Nbd7 6.Bf4 Nxe5 7.Bxe5 Qd5?! [RM: 7...Nd7 is a better way to contest the e5 square.; JB: Since the Queen will eventually be poked back, preferable is 7...e6 .] 8.d4 c6 9.Nc3 Qf7 [JB: Admittedly novel play, but the queen seems misplaced here. After 9...Qa5 at least Black would be threatening ...Ne4 or ...e6 followed by ...Bb4.] 10.Bd3 Be6 11.0-0 g5?! [RM: 11...0-0-0 is better than self-pinning the Knight.] 12.Re1 0-0-0? [RM: >=12...Bg7+- is needed to escape the pin. Black could play ...Nh5 next, challenging the Be5.] 13.Qe2 RM: Black does not have a good answer to the annoying threat of Bxf6. 13...Bd7 [JB: No doubt Black wanted to play 13...Rg8 here, but the misplaced e6 bishop would have been unprotected after 14.Bxf6 .] 14.d5! RM: Clearing the diagonal for the Q to visit a7. 14...cxd5 15.Qe3 JB: No need to get the pawn back quickly - White has played simple developing moves and owing to Black's "creative" play, White has reached an overwhelming position. The refusal by Black to develop his dark square Bishop has caused his rooks to be disconnected and makes long-term defense impossible. 15...Ng4 RM: Black does not have anything better. If the Be5 lives, Qxa7 is too strong. The game is simply lost. 16.Qc5+ Bc6 17.Bxh8 e5 18.Qxa7 Bd6 19.h3 Rxh8 20.hxg4 e4 21.Bb5 Bb8 22.Qd4 Re8 23.Nxd5 [JB: The computer prefers the safer 23.Rad1 for White, but this position is relatively easily won with any reasonable continuation.] 23...Rd8 [JB: While Black could win a piece with 23...Bxb5 White' ability to bring in a rook quickly with 24.Re3 (to be followed by another rook) means the end is in sight no matter what.] 24.Nb6+ Kc7 25.Na8+ Kc8 26.Qc3 Qd5 1-0
