#19 Hotshot - The Winner of the First Race Held at Sebring, Florida - December 31, 1950

In March, 2004, I took #19 to the 52nd Annual Mobil "1" 12 Hours of Sebring Race.  We parked in the Gallery of Legends, and it was an opportunity to display the car for many who had only heard about the Crosley.  I talked to several people who remembered seeing it there back in December, 1950.  Bobby Deshon, one of the original drivers of #19, met me there for the four day event.  He was hoping to get the car on the track for the vintage car parade, which featured the 50th anniversary of Sir Sterling Moss's victory in an Osca, but it didn't fit the plans.  Later in the week when we visited Bobby at his home he said, "If they had let me drive the Crosley this year, I might have tried to pass Moss; because I never could when I raced him at Sebring."  Bobby began racing in 1949.  When asked what it was like driving the Crosley during the 1950 race, Bobby replied, "It was faster through the corners than the Ferrari.  Frits Koster and I knew it could not accelerate, but it would cut the corners at 40-45 m.p.h."

Vic Sharpe

In November, 2005, we stopped by Raleigh, North Carolina, to visit Vic Sharpe and his wife Faye.  Vic is the original owner of #19.  In 1950 he drove it from Tampa to Sebring where it was entered as a late entry in the 6 hour endurance race.   It sure put a smile on his face to talk about the car again and, more importantly, to drive it.

FarmOroad

In 2008 I restored a 1950 FarmOroad.  I always wanted one.  It is a very popular part of my collection.

PMY-I

Walter Martin, a high school shop teacher, built three H-Mod race cars using Crosley engines and drive trains.  The first car, known as the papier mache special, was built by the shop class in 1958.  In March, 2007, I acquired the second car,  PMY-I built in 1960, from Joe Miller in Pennsylvania.  Ed Buck, owner of the third car, helped me with a lot of the history of the Walter Martin cars.  The car was in bad shape as you can see in the first two photos.  I cleaned it up added some missing parts, reconditioned the engine, and had it running by July, 2007, for the Crosley National Meet.
