Major house cleaning was done twice a year.

Homes had hard wood floors. Wall to wall carpet wasn't really in, so most rooms had a carpet that was in the center of the room and covered most of the floor. The carpet was not as you know carpets today, it was more in the line of Persian carpet, thin with little nap and no padding underneath. This was to make the room feel warmer and also to cut down on the noise of walking on the hard wood floor. During the spring and fall cleaning, the carpet was rolled up and taken out side. There it was stretched out across a couple clothes lines. You then took the carpet beater and beat the dust and dirt out of the carpet. You hoped for a windy day to carry the dust away from you as you beat away. This was no easy task as the dirt was deeply imbedded in the fabric of the carpet.
