Shoes were all leather . |

| As kids the shoes we wore were all leather and leather soles have a way of wearing out real fast. It didn't take long before you had a hole worn through the sole at the ball of your foot. We would cut a piece of cardboard the size of your foot and slip this inside the shoe so you didn't wear a hole through your sock. After a while you would purchase a half-sole repair kit which came with a rubber half-sole and a tube of contact cement so you could replace the sole on your shoe and it would be good for a while again. Another thing that was available were cleats. These are steel pieces that were nailed to the heel and toe of the shoe to extend the wear of the sole and heel also. A brand name that was popular was Buster Brown shoes. Remember the jingle? "Hi I'm Buster Brown, I live in a shoe, that's my dog Tige, he lives in there too." |
