You had several visitors throughout the day |
|
Among them will be the Omar bread man with his small panel truck packed with fresh bread and pastries. He make door to door stops to sell his wares.
Perhaps the Fuller brush man would stop, selling his top of the line brushes and accessories, unloading his case of brushes and sprays on the living room floor and perhaps presenting a little gift to any housewife who would spare a few minutes to listen to his spiel. How about the Watkins man selling his line of Household, Personal Care, Medicinal, Gourmet Food Items, and Health & Nutrition items. Watkins was the first to offer a Satisfaction guarantee. Remember that great vanilla?
There was always the chance that the ragman would stop by to collect and buy your rags and old clothes. He would stuff them into large burlap bags and pile them on the back of his truck.
There was even a junk man who would buy scrap metal from you . Who said recycling was a new thing. War time made a lot of materials scarce and these men made a living collecting and selling these items. Don't forget the knife and scissors sharpening man. He would stop by and sharpen your knives and scissors with the equipment on his truck. Some items required that he take them to his shop to heat treat them to reharden the edges. He would then sharpen them and return them the next week. The milkman would come to deliver milk and cream in fresh filled bottles carrying the clinking big bottles in a wire carrier and picking up your empties. He usually left the full bottles sit outside by the back door unless you had a milk chute (a small square door in the side of the house where the milk would be put that had a door inside the house also for you to take the milk out). In the winter if they sat too long the milk would freeze and push the paper cap up on a little tower of frozen milk.
How about the Electrolux, Kirby and Hoover vacuum cleaner salesmen. Part of their sales pitch was to demonstrate how well their machines worked. They would empty a bag of dirt and bird seeds on mother's clean carpet and we would hope and pray their vacuums worked.
