| The water was pumped from a cistern in the basement that was filled with rain water collected from the roof when it rained. The water was pumped into a large kettle which was placed on the stove to be heated. Then the heated water was put in the sink so dishes could be done. Drinking water for the house was available in a pail which was filled, usually outside, by the well pump. This sat in the kitchen with a dipper in it from which everyone would drink from. |
