Concerts

Let's preface this by going over the bands I've seen.  That should give you an idea of my music tastes.  I still have 99% of my ticket stubs, and many poor quality pictures of the concert.  Many were from the front row, as I had more money than sense - until I got married!  Plus one of the women I worked with in the Marines in Memphis - well, her husband ran the base Special Services office.  He always got premium concert and sporting event seats for the Marines & Sailors serving their country.  God bless that man!

Aerosmith x 2 - (The Iowa State Jam & Hollywood Bowl - talk about extreme opposites of the spectrum!).

Accept - (Iowa State Jam) - You remember them?  They sang "You've Got Your Balls to the Wall".  One hit wonders...

Concert - ACDC 1986.jpg (40492 bytes)  Concerts - ACDC - Angus in the crowd - real close 1986.jpg (42038 bytes) Concerts - ACDC - Firing Cannon on For Those About to Rock tour 1986.jpg (42810 bytes) Concerts - ACDC Angus Young and Brian Johnson 1986.jpg (38651 bytes)

AC/DC - (Memphis) - I got a great shot of Angus somewhere, as he came into the crowd playing his guitar solo.  I fell over 3 or 4 people to get the shot, but strangely, they were more concerned if I got the picture than about their spilled beers.  Oh, I love my fellow rockers!

Autograph - (Memphis)

Bon Jovi - x 2 (Mud Island - Memphis) - I was pulled backstage before Ratt took the stage.  I was (ahem) using a compressed butane canister to fill my mouth and blow 4 - 6 foot flames during the show (in the audience).  Well, security being what it was, they came and pulled my ass backstage so that I could be questioned.  "Are you part of pyrotechnics team?" was the first question... "How'd you make those big old flames?" was the other.  I sheepishly showed them a lighter, which the chief promptly tossed into the Mississippi river and sent my back into the crowd.  My fellow Marine and good friend, Rodney Glidden, handed me the butane bottle and his lighter, and I was back in action - with the added benefit of having seen Jon Bon Jovi sampling hot dogs from the cart backstage.  Turns out my sister-in-law graduated with Jon from a New Jersey high school.....small world!

Boston - Los Angeles

Barry Manilow (hey - it was for the wife) - Thousand Oaks, California.  Barry actually put on a decent show.  He's quite the entertainer....there - I said it!

Cult - San Diego

Def Leppard - Irvine Amphitheatre.  Man, this was perhaps my last, great drinking binge rock concert.  My neighbor, Stormin' Norman, and I went to his friends in Huntington Beach in his Acura, got quite loaded with some friends there (my last memorable quarters game) before heading south to Irvine.  Def Leppard still kicked ass...

Concert - Dokken 1985.jpg (31790 bytes)

Dokken - Rockford, Illinois.  They opened for Sammy Hagar's VOA tour.

Flock of Seagulls - 1983 Chicago - Cominsky Park - My first rock concert.  5 bands and a great road trip.  I got fired from my job at Camp Abe Lincoln in Blue Grass, Iowa for going...(Denny Henson - your an Ass!).

The Fixx - 1983 Chicago

ZZ Top (Mid South Stadium - Memphis)

The background music you heard on this page is from the Blues Brothers movie.  If you buy the live Blues Brother album, it was recorded just about 4 blocks from my house in Rock Island, Illinois - at the Augustana College auditorium.  I believe hearing that album kindled my passion for music, as did the Blues Brother movie.   Strangely, another movie (Star Wars) made me appreciate the classical, or more appropriately, symphonic movements.  Diverse to say the least.  My favorite rock song?  Too difficult to say, as it changes with my mood.  My favorite classical song is Adagio for Strings, by Mr. Samuel Barber (it's also the theme music for Platoon).
