Tustin Page

Right after Boot Camp, I spent 3 months at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Tustin, California.   The base was a huge farm that the government offered to place an airbase right in the middle of.  The Two huge blimp hangars in the middle of the base dominate most every picture ever taken of this area.  They are National Historical Monuments, and as such, they won't be torn down anytime soon.

Not like they get much use anymore....Tustin was a victim of defense budget cuts, as well as snooty neighbors who were more afraid of a plane crash, or declining property values than a possible invasion by Russian or Chinese troops might cause.  Tustin's heavy lift squadrons were redeployed to MCAS Camp Pendleton, MCAS Miramar and MCAS 29 Palms.   These squadrons consisted of primarily the large CH-46 and huge CH-53 helicopters.  The CH-53 is recognizable from it's massive 7 blade rotors.  The CH-46 has 2 main rotor heads, one on each end of the helicopter, and they are counter-meshing.  Try interlocking your two hands together and you'll get the idea.

Here are some pictures from the base.
