Our Careers Tony Tony began his working career as a highway construction engineer in Ottawa, Canada, later moving to Toronto to work for Ontario Hydro as an estimating engineer. While in Toronto, he enrolled in the MBA program at York University. He moved into management consulting with Ernst & Ernst in 1967 to better use his MBA skills and was soon transferred to Montreal. The move upset the MBA program so he took continuing MBA courses at Concordia, but never finished the degree, still being two credits short. In 1973 he left Ernst & Ernst to create his own management consulting firm with Ian Kennedy. This company operated continuously until 1992. In 1978 Tony had an opportunity to get into magazine publishing through one of his client trade associations. That led to a career in publishing that continues to this day. As a publisher, he created several city lifestyle magazines and bought or managed several not for profit association publications. During that period his magazines won over 30 magazine awards. He has been published in several industry magazines and has given speeches on a number of occasions. In 1993, the publishing company that Tony was managing declared bankruptcy, a condition brought on by the lingering recession in Canada and the very unstable economy in Quebec caused by separatist rhetoric. This forced him to return to consulting for a short period until new employment was found. This happened in 1994 when he was hired by the IEEE Computer Society to head up a new publishing division in Los Alamitos, California. After three very happy years with the Computer Society, Tony was approached by science publisher Academic Press and offered an international vice presidency in their head office in San Diego. He accepted in July of 1997 and in 1998 moved to San Diego permanently. In 2000 Academic Press was sold to Reed Elsevier and Tony continued to be a vice president in their Elsevier division until his retirement in November of 2004. In 1998 Tony was listed in the "Who's Who of Professionals." Since retiring, Tony has remained busy with home renovation projects and volunteering with a local charity, The Bookman.
