2004 Tom X. Chao Public Appearances

In chronological order--most recent first.  All appearances take place by invitation unless otherwise specified.

Plays and Playwrights 2004 reading at Barnes & Noble, Astor Place
Wednesday, August 18 at 7:30 pm
Readings from three of the plays featured in Plays and Playwrights 2004.  Cats Can See The Devil was not included, because Tom stepped away from his computer for a few moments when the request for readings came in.  Tom did attend, and signed a few copies of the book which are probably still sitting on the shelf at the B&N.

The Hell Festival
The Brick Theater Inc. presented THE HELL FESTIVAL from July 23 to August 22, a multi-arts festival.  It featured:
How to Invoke Pan
Written by Craig Heimbichner & Tom X. Chao
Read by Tom X. Chao
Tom X. Chao presents an essay co-authored with Craig Heimbichner ("The Occult Debunker") that details instructions for invoking the demon Pan.  The glossolalia involved has been hugely popular amongst downtown sophisticates.  DISCLAIMER: Pan will not appear.  Do not attempt.
See an online interview with Tom, Craig Heimbichner, Trav S.D., & Jeff Lewonczyk at the nytheatre.com site.

The Shark Show's 1st Annual Battle of the Funny Bands:
Tom narrowly missed advancing to the finals. Tom performed "Lower Your Standards" and "Cannot Be Denied" with pre-recorded accompaniment. He was edged out by Kimmy Gatewood and his old pal from USC, Rob Paravonian, possibly as a result of asking the audience to vote for Rob.
This humbling defeat took place at the Parkside Lounge, Saturday, July 17th, 8 pm.
In the finals the following week, Rob, Kimmy, & God's Pottery (Wilson Hall & Krister Johnson) were all defeated by Nathan Caswell.
Read more description and see a picture of Tom and Rob on the T. C. Boyle message board here.

Tom and Maggie Cino (Tiny Budget Theater) reprised "Lunch in Los Angeles" on Friday, April 30, 10:30 pm at The Kraine Theater.  We were the opening act for "Gilligan Stump! and Tha Perfesser … Campaign Stump! 2004" (a creation of Joseph Langham). His website is located at http://www.brokenarmproductions.org

Tom and actress Jenny McClintock appeared in Schoolhouse Roxx, the new variety and incredibly loud rock music show at P.S.122, Saturday, April 17. 10:30 pm.  They performed "Jaded Individual."  The evening was hosted by the lovely, talented duo of Becky and Noelle!  Produced by Travis Chamberlain.

The Plays and Playwrights 2004 reading took place on Monday, March 22, 7 pm, at Theater Ten Ten, 1010 Park Avenue.  Tom, with cast members Monica Cortez, Kim Katzberg, Andrea Ryder, and Krista Watterworth, presented scenes from Cats Can See The Devil.  In addition, 5 other plays were represented, and the evening was hosted by Martin and Rochelle Denton.

Tom X. Chao & veteran downtown performer/creator Maggie Cino performed their new one-act play, "Lunch in Los Angeles," on February 27 at BRIC Studio in downtown Brooklyn (next door to BAM).  It provoked a near-riot.  Visit BRIC Studio's website for details.

Tom X. Chao and Rachel Astarte Piccione re-created "Jaded Individual" for the Prospect Theater Dark Nights "EXode II" (yes, that's how they spell it) variety show, Jan 18-25, at the Frederick Loewe Theater of Hunter College.  We were sadly under-appreciated by the two or three audience members who showed up.
