Jeff Orrock, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, Raleigh National Weather Service brought us up-to-date on hurricanes in NC.  Here is some of the information presented to us:

1) Hurricane forecasting is based on extensive historical data patterns of past hurricanes.

2) NC is a major hurricane target on the USA east coast!

3) NC has much increased exposure to hurricane damage due to significant population increase, in particular,

a quadrupling of coastal population.

4) NC hurricane experience:

Category 1 - every 3 years                           

Category 2 - every 6 years

Category 3 - every 15 years

Category 4 - every 27 years

5) Raleigh hurricane experience:

Category 1 - every 17 years

Category 2 - every 32 years

Category 3 - every 52 years

Category 4 - every 130 years
