Fred Polnisch Uncle Sam Special Events

"Uncle Sam came home. He came in the person of Fred Polnisch of Troy, N.Y., an impersonator who makes school presentations about “Uncle Sam” and is the author of the book “Uncle Sam, My Story.” He fits the part well, as he is tall, thin and wears a white goatee. He came to a gathering last week at the Mason house on Valley Road where Samuel Wilson once lived ( in Mason, NH ). The circa-1773 house is now owned by Cecile and Jean-Pierre Mouraux of Sonoma, Calif. Jean-Pierre is an ardent fan of Uncle Sam and collector of Uncle Sam memorabilia.

He plans, at some point, to make this boyhood home of an American icon a museum. The Mourauxs were in Mason to show the house to friends and neighbors at the end of last week." In 1961, Wilson was officially recognized by Congress as the model for our vision of “Uncle Sam.”

Warren D. Jorgensen wrote in American Profile Magazine July 3-9, 2005, "As students and parents gather at the town hall in Peterburgh, N.Y. (pop. 1,563), Fred Polnisch gets into character as Uncle Sam, donning a red, white and blue top hat, tails and striped trousers.

Then, in story and song, Polnisch brings American history to life, carrying the audience along on Paul Revere’s ride in 1775, and to the deck of a ship where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the Star Spangled Banner.

Polnisch, of Clifton Park, N.Y. (pop. 32,995), has been wearing the colorful suit during performances at school and civic functions since retiring as a General Electric engineer in 1992."
