Dambulla,

Sri Lanka

Item Number—P100

The five cave temples of Dambulla house approximately 150 statues of Buddha and other Hindu deities. The caves date back to the first century B.C. when King Valagambahu sought refuge in these caves from Southern Indian invaders.  After he was restored to his throne he transformed the caves into temples that through the centuries became home for many magnificent statues and murals.  This photo shows both a standing Buddha and a Buddha in meditation, seated in the lotus position.  Buddha images are traditionally highly stylized and are meant to depict the Buddha’s transcendental, superhuman nature .
