Salvador de Bahia, Brazil |
Item Number—P75 |
Brazil's first national capital (1549-1763), Salvador de Bahia, is rich in African history, with most of Brazil's African slaves brought to this port city for over three centuries. With four out of five Salvadoreans claiming African blood, it is the most African city in South America. The colorful colonial buildings of old town, Pelourinho, reflect not only an artistic sensitivity; but, in earlier colonial times, a way for tax collectors to identify residences. |
