Chile—Bolivia Border |
Item Number—P128 |
This image was taken at more than 15,000 feet near the isolated border crossing from Bolivia to Chile. Herds of wild vicuñas like these are plentiful in this desolate area that is now a national park. The vicuña, a relative of the llama and alpaca, is prized for its fine wool because it can only be shorn once every three years. Endangered in the 1960s, there are now around 125,000 vicuñas roaming the high plains of the South American Andes. |
