Pastor's Corner

Q. I'm puzzled about the Mass we had on Thanksgiving. Some people who were raised in other Christian denominations became Catholic, but all they did was make First Communion. To my knowledge, there was no rite or ceremony marking their reception into the Church, and some parishioners had no idea the people have actually become Catholics. Is this something new?

A. Nothing new happened. They had completed two years in the parish RCIA Program and had participated in all the prescribed rites including the Profession of Faith in the teachings of the Catholic Church. What you observed was something we have not previously done at OLMC. They were invited to be with the priest at the altar table during the Mass of the their First Holy Communion.

Q. Where in Scripture does it say that Jesus will actually come back?

A. Following are a few texts you might want to look up.
Matthew 24:44
Luke 21:27
1 Thes 2:19 2
Pet 3:4 & following
James 5: 7

Q. If evolution is true how come there are no men coming from apes now?

A. I remember an incident while I was in college many years ago. Members of the class were discussing the theory of evolution. The professor interrupted us at one point and said: "You can never prove to me that an elephant could ever evolve from a gnat." We were all stunned because he evidenced such a profound misunderstanding of the theory.

The theory of evolution does not propose that man came from apes or that apes came from man. Many people who talk for or against evolution do not understand it. I am not prepared to attempt an explanation of the theory.

The Scriptures are silent about the HOW of creation. The Creation Stories found in Genesis should not be understood as an explanation of how God created. They are stories commonly found among the peoples of that region which the biblical authors, inspired by God, borrowed to teach some profound truths, namely, that all that we see around us is created by one God; that all that He has created is good; that of all the creatures on earth man and woman are unique being made in God's own image, etc

Don't forget the Pot Luck!

The Little Rock Bible Study program will host its annual Pot Luck on Sunday, June 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. Our speaker, Dr. Terry McGoldrick (Director of the Institute for Adult Education and Ministry Formation, San Diego Diocese), is very familiar with our goals, as he led the Little Rock program at Our Lady of Grace parish in El Cajon a few years ago. He is delighted to join us for this event. More details to follow soon.
