Reunion News
The next WHSAA Reunion to be held in Birminghgam in August 2015. The reunion will be held at the Hyatt Regency Winfrey Hotel in Riverchase Galleria. The dates and rates have not yet been released. As it becomes available, the WHSAA web site will contain more information.

New Park Building Near Completion
There is new building at the Dolomite-Westfield Park. Click HERE to see photos taken by Ron Mastin, See recent updates on Facebook at the Westfield High School, Birmingham Alabama page.

Ribbon-cutting will take place at the park on September 6, 2014.

Recent Obituaries

MGrantMELVIN GRANT, age 74 died on July 20, 2014, surrounded by his family. He graduated with honors from Westfield High in 1957 . He also graduated with honor from Miles College with a degree in Mathematics. While at Miles he letter in footballk basketball and baseball. He earned his Master's Degree in mathematics with honors from Southern Illinois University. Melvin began his teaching career in 1961 at Hooper City High where he taught Mathematics and coached football, basketball and baseball. In 1973 he transferred to Wenonah High where he was the chairman of the Mathematics Department , coach of the Academic Bowl and Math Teams, served as head football coach and also coached basketball and baseball until his retirement in 1995. He was a lifelong and devoted member of St. Paul AME Church, Wylam where he served as Superintendent of the Sunday School and also served as a Steward. Melvin is survived by his wife of 54 years, Luzadie, his daughter, Attorney Twala Grant Wallace, his sisters Roberta Johnson and Georgia Mayes, sister in law, Doris Grant, brothe-in-law Howad Smith and a host of other family and friends.

Norma MayfieldNORMA REBECCA COLEMAN MAYFIELD died on March 5, 2014. Born January 30, 1933 in Westfield, AL, she was the fourth of eight siblings born to Matthew Coleman, Sr and Norma Virginia Pippens Coleman, both whom preceded her in death. An excellent student, she graduated from Westfield High School at 16 years old. Soon after she married Allen (A.D.) Mayfield. To this union of 61 years was born four children. Relocating to Detroit in 1950, Norma graduated from Parker Institute as a Medical associate and was employed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, She retired as a supervisor and peer review analyst after 23 years of service. Norma was energetic within her church (Temple A.M.E. Zion) and in her community.Among the many positions she held were Director of Christian Education, Vicce-President of Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society and Chairperson of Legislative Affairs for Annual Conference.She was recognized by the City of Detroit for her many outstanding contributions to her community, including President of the Mound, Outer Drive, Ryan, Seven Mile Association President of the We Care Day Committee, and active member of several community improvement, safety and educational organizations. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son and daughter. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one sister, two brothers and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lewis RutledgeLEWIS RUTLEDGE of San Diego died on February 22, 2014. Born on September 27, 1940, he was married to Jessie Mae Simmons of Docena in 1972. Lewis served in US Navy and US Coast Guard for 20 years, retiring on New Years Day, 1980. After retirement, he settled in San Diego and worked at San Diego State University for 20 years.Lewis was an active member of Bayview Baptist Church and loved to travel, especially on cruises. He is survived by his wife, two children, five grandhildren and three great-grandchildren.

BraggESSIE BRAGG of the California Chapter passed away on February 7 after a long illness. Bragg was a Westfieldian in the late ‘40s.

of Pittsburgh, PA passed on February 5, 2014. McDonald grew up in the former Westfield community in Birmingham and he was a 1958 graduate of Westfield High School.
