Reunion News
The next WHSAA Reunion to be held in Cleveland on August 21-24, 2014. The reunion will be held at the Renaissance Hotel, 24 Public Square, Cleveland, OH 44113. The room rates are, $129.00/night for a deluxe room with 1 or 2 beds (your choice) and $199.00/night for an executive suite. Reservations may be made as early as Sunday, September 1, 2013 at 216-696-5600 or toll free at 1-800-468-3571. One may also contact the hotel at http://www.Renaissancecleveland.com. Please mention Westfield High School Alumni Association when reserving a room. To acheive this rate, rooms must be reserved not later than July 22, 2014. Please reserve rooms early.

Westfield High School Class of 1963's 50-year reunion was held in Birmingham on 14-16 June 2013 at the Hilton Birmingham Perimeter Park Hotel.

The Class of 1964 will be celebrating its 50th Reunion, June 19-22, 2014, at the Birmingham Sheraton Hotel. Recent Obituaries

Norma MayfieldNORMA REBECCA COLEMAN MAYFIELD died on March 5, 2014. Born January 30, 1933 in Westfield, AL, she was the fourth of eight siblings born to Matthew Coleman, Sr and Norma Virginia Pippens Coleman, both whom preceded her in death. An excellent student, she graduated from Westfield High School at 16 years old. Soon after she married Allen (A.D.) Mayfield. To this union of 61 years was born four children. Relocating to Detroit in 1950, Norma graduated from Parker Institute as a Medical associate and was employed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, She retired as a supervisor and peer review analyst after 23 years of service. Norma was energetic within her church (Temple A.M.E. Zion) and in her community.Among the many positions she held were Director of Christian Education, Vicce-President of Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society and Chairperson of Legislative Affaurs for Annual Conference.She was recognized by the City of Detroit for her many outstanding contributions to her community, including President of the Mound, Outer Drive, Ryan, Seven Mile Association President of the We Care Day Committee, and active member of several community improvement, daftery and educational organizations. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son and daughter. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one sister, two brothers and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lewis RutledgeLEWIS RUTLEDGE of San Diego died on February 22, 2014. Born on September 27, 1940, he was married to Jessie Mae Simmons of Docena in 1972. Lewis served in US Navy and US Coast Guard for 20 years, retiring on New Years Day, 1980. After retirement, he settled in San Diego and worked at San Diego State University for 20 years.Lewis was an active member of Bayview Baptist Church and loved to travel, especially on cruises. He is survived by his wife, two children, five grandhildren and three great-grandchildren.

BraggESSIE BRAGG of the California Chapter passed away on February 7 after a long illness. Bragg was a Westfieldian in the late ‘40s.

of Pittsburgh, PA passed on February 5, 2014. McDonald grew up in the former Westfield community in Birmingham and he was a 1958 graduate of Westfield High School.

DOLORES SANDERS MITCHELL, 74, passed away on September 9, 2013. A 1957 graduate of Westfield High, she attended Miles College and Miles Law School. She was the oldest graduate of the Law School. Dolores taught in the Jefferson County School System, retiring after 35 years, She was last employed at Sandusky Elementary School. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Dolores is survived by her son, Curtis Mitchell, Jr., sister Alma Sims, brothers, Clarence and O'Neal Sanders, fifteen grandchilcren, threee great-grandchildren, special niece, Jo Ann Jones and special nephew, Joseph Jones.

RubySandersRUBY GILLISPIE SANDERS, passed on September 9, 2013. She was born and reared in Hissop, Alabama and later moved to Jefferson County where she attended Westfield High School. She was united in holy matrimony to John Sanders, Jr. and to this union six children were born. She was a classroom instructor for over 35 years. She was prede-ceased by parents, Homer and Mary Gillispie; son, Marvin Sanders; and brother, Carnett Gillispie. Her precious memories will be cherished by: husband, John Sanders, Jr.; two sons, Gregory Sanders, Reginald (Janice) Sanders; three daughters, LaCosta (Norris) Banks and Angenetta Overstreet , both of Birmingham, Donna Sanders of Atlanta; two brothers, Roosevelt (Alma) Gillispie of Birmingham, Andrew (Frances) Gillispie of Atlanta, GA and Tommy Gillispie, who was reared as a brother; two sisters-in-law: Amy Gillispie and Helen Davidson; uncle, Thomas Jackson of Youngstown, Ohio; aunt, Bonnie Jones of Youngstown, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

, 71, passed on July 11, 2013. A 1960 graduate of Westfield High, George received a BA degree in Education from Monte Valley University and studied further in New York, receiving his Masters degree in English and Fench. He continued his study of French in France. He began teaching in Mississippi, moving to the Jefferson County school system a year later where he taught high school English and French and was a senior advisor for over 20 years while studying for his Ph.D. Later he became an assistant principal and served in that capacity for over ten years. After retiring from the Jefferson County School System, George accepted a position as an English and French professor at Miles College, eventually becoming a career guidance counselor. George traveled extensively, taking yearly trips to France with his French class students. George was active in the Birmingham civil and social rights movements - in his younger years, he arranged a beauty pageant for black women when they were barred from participating in local and Alabama state pageants. He was know for being an outstanding bass singer, having sang with the Carlton Reese Singers.

JANIE MAXEYJANIE PRINGLE MAXEY passed on July 5, 2013. Janie was a graduate of Westfield High, Class of 1959.

, GregChisolm61, died on May 19, 2013. He was born in Adamsville, AL, the 6th of 10 children of Willie Sr. and Minnie Chisolm. Though he didn't attend Westfield High, several of his siblings, including Arthur and Phelan, did. Greg was an accomplished musician, playing piano and trumpet in "Total Destruction", a finalist in a Battle of the Bands contest. Greg had a long history in retail management with Kinney's Shoes, J.C. Penney and Check into Cash and for a short stunt, was a 7-Eleven store manager. He married in 1969 and had 4 children. He was living in Las Vegas at the time of his death. He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, two sons, five grandchildren, six siblings, his mother and a host of nephews, neices and other relatives and friends. Four brothers and his father preceded him in death.

Pie GrayERNEST GRAY, 84, died on May 15. 2013. He was the third in a faily of seven born to Jim and Minnie Lee Pippen Gray of Westfield, AL. Ernest attend Westfield schools and played football for Westfield High. He was employed at US Steel where he worked in the Tin-Mill Fairfield Works for 12 months and Fairfield Coke and Chemical for 39.5 years. In addition, he was a Fairfield police officer for six years and a security officer for 15 years. He was a lover of Gospel music and was well known for his melodious gospel voice. At Saint Paul AME Church in Fairfield he held several office in the choir and Trustee Board. He was preceded in death by one daughter, three sons and two brothers. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife (Annie M. Gray), 12 children24 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

79,passed away on May 4, 2013. The only child of Norman and Blanche Mincy Clark, she was born and raised in Adamsville Alabama and was a graduate of Westfield High School and Miles College. She married Johnnie B. Faniel in 1955. After moving to Fairfield, she joined First Baptist Church where she was a member of several choirs and served as secretary in several church organizations. She was a memver of the Westfield High Alumni Association and Fairfield Wsinging Seniors. Mae taught high school English in Columbus MS, Tuscaloosa, Leeds and Fairfield. She leaves an uncle and aunt, an adopted daughter and a goddaughter, and a host of other relatives and friends.
