Notes for SARAH GILLENS:
Sarah GILLEMS Harbinson received a Widow's Pension for her husbands Revolutionary War Service. In her application she stated that he served while living in Guilford County, NC and that they married in Guilford County, NC. The name is listed as both Harbinson and Harbin in the application with the dominate spelling shown as Harbinson. On 13 Feb 1846 Sarah was a resident of Elbert County GA and 84 years of age. Sarah claimed that her husband had been a private in the North Carolina Militia in the Revolutionary War and served at least one year. She stated that they married on 22 May 1776 and that her husband, William Harbinson died 14 Feb 1820.
John Wilson of Anderson District, SC gave an affidivit that he knew William Harbinson and Sarah Gillems before their marriage and remembered when they married and that he lived about 4 miles from them at that time. he stated that he was in service with William Harbinson and that they served under Col. Okneal and Capt Andrew Wilson. Widow's Pension No. 7706.
NOTE:
William Harbinson or Harbin used the name William Harbin when he moved to Georgia. Documents to support that William Harbinson and William Harbin was the same man can be found in his widow’s Pension Application where both names are shown. Also in the Pension application is an affidavit from his daughter Anna Scales and her husband Aron Scales. Anna Harbin married Aaron Scales in Elbert County Georgia on 26 Nov 1808 (see certificate). Anna Scales is named in the LWT of William Harbin of Elbert County, GA dated 10 Oct 1818. Anna and husband Aaron Scales are in the 1850 Federal Census living in Marietta, Cobb, Georgia; Roll: M432_66; Page: 232B but Anna died before the estate of William Harbin was settled after the death of his wife Sarah. Anna is not listed in the returns but her two daughters, Sarah Donehoo and Margaret Kelly received their mother’s share. In the Revolutionary War Widows Pension File of John Hudgins/Hutchings (R 7515) is a letter dated Dec 17, 1845 from William G. Collins, Comptroller of Public Accounts for the State of North Carolina that he had located service records for William Harbin / Harbinson and that both spellings seem to be for the same man. Collins offered to send a Certificate for Wm. Harbin or W. Harbinson. It appears that the same agent was assisting Sarah Harbin and the widow of John Hudgins/Hutchings with their applications for a Widow’s Pension of their husband’s service.
