Job SMITH was born 15 Feb 1793 in Pendleton Co., SC and died on 08 Jun 1840 in Walton Co., GA. He was son of Revolutionary War Soldier, David Smith and his wife Rebecca Lindley. Job was named for his paternal grandfather, Job Smith, Sr. and his uncle, Job Smith, Jr.
Job married on 10 Aug 1817 in Jackson Co., GA to Nancy CAMP who was born 07 Mar 1795 in SC and died 27 Nov 1887 in Walton Co., GA. Nancy was the daughter of Thomas Camp and Susannah Wagner.
He and his wife Nancy lived in lived in Walton Co. (now Barrow Co.) GA. The pages of their family Bible were tore from the Bible and sent as documentation when Job’s mother, Rebecca Lindley Smith applied for a widow’s pension for her husband’s service in the Revolution. Copies of the Bible are included in the records available from the US National Archives.
Job Smith served as Walton County Clerk of the Court of Ordinary from 1819 through 1928. He was a merchant and farmer. Job is listed in the Walton Co. 1826 Tax Digest owning 6 Slaves, 560 acres and a Town Lot in Monroe. In 1831 he owned 14 Slaves, 950 acres in Walton Co. and 202 ½ acres in Upson Co. and 800 Shares of Stock. By 1834 he owned 18 Slaves, 1473 acres in Walton and 202 ½ acres in Upson County and 1000 Shares of Stock.
Job died on 8 Jun 1840 in Walton Co. He was 47 years old and left several minor children. He had provided a comfortable life for his family. Job’s widow, Nancy was listed in 1852 Tax Digest of Cutoff District of Walton Co. and she owned 600 acres valued at $1200.00 and 4 Slaves valued at $1500.00. The following year she owned 300 acres valued at $2000.00 and 5 Slaves valued at $2500.00. Nancy died on 27 Nov 1887 in Walton Co. She and Job were buried in the David Smith Family Cemetery on Hog Mountain Rd., Winder, Barrow Co., GA.
