WILLIAM SHELL was born Abt. 1730 in VA, and died Abt. 1807 in Newberry District, SC. He married (1) AMELIA ELLIS, daughter of CALEB ELLIS and AMELIA SHOCKEY. He married (2) ABIGAIL COLLINGSWORTH.

The following data were abstracted from a book in the Laurens Co. courthouse, but they are pertinent to a much larger area. In the early years, an Equity court was held in Laurens for ?the united districts of Greenville, Laurens, and Newberry,? which was called the Washington Equity District.
Estate Partitions in the Washington District Court of Equity, 1803-1826
Pages 10-11a. (Estate of WILLIAM SHELL). Petition of Harmon Shell of Newberry District sheweth that William Shell, Senior, deceased, died owning a tract of land on ( ) creek, waters of Enoree River in the District aforesaid, containing 130 acres. In August, 1807, the said William Shell departed this life intestate, leaving a widow Abigail Shell and ten children, to wit, all of Newberry District:

i. Harmon Shell, who prays for a partition,
ii. Stephen Shell,
iii. John Shell,
iv. William Shell,
v. Milly, wife of John Hatton,
vi. Lemon Shell,
vii. Nancey, wife of John Dugan,
viii. Cornelius Shell,
ix. Doherty Lemon Shell,
x. Lucy, wife of James Wright.

The said Cornelius and Doherty are aged seven and six, respectively. Petitioner prays that Lemon(?) Shell, administrator of the said deceased, be appointed guardian of Cornelius and Doherty Lemon(?), and that the property be divided. Filed 29 Feb. 1808. A subsequent petition also dated 29 Feb. 1808 asks that the property be sold. John Garlington, Commissioner in Equity.
