WILLIAM POLK BOGGS (son of EZEKIEL BOGGS and ELIZA NICHOLS) was born 20 Nov 1844 in Jackson County, GA, and died 14 Jun 1921 in Jackson County GA. He married MARTHA ANGELINE WILLIAMSON 22 Jan 1875 in Jackson County, GA, daughter of ANDREW WILLIAMSON and NANCY KINNEY. She was born 17 Oct 1856 in Jackson County, GA, and died 16 Aug 1954 in Jackson County, GA.

CONFEDERATE GEORGIA TROOPS, 5th Regiment, Georgia Infantry
5th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1861, and for a time served at Pensacola. Its members were recruited in the counties of Clinch, Spalding, Dawson, Camden, McDuffie, Schley, and Upson. During the war it served under the command of J.K. Jackson, Talliaferro, and G.P. Harrison. The 5th participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, then served at Savannah and fought in North Carolina. This unit lost thirty-seven percent of the 173 engaged at Murfreesboro and fifty-five percent of the 317 at Chickamauga. It totalled 227 men and 137 arms in December, 1863, and had 256 effectives in March, 1865. In April it surrendered. The field officers were Colonels William T. Black, C.P. Daniel, John K. Jackson, and Samuel W. Mangham; Lieutenant Colonels Thomas Beall, Charles B. Day, and John F. Iverson; and Majors David H. Ashley, W.B. Hundley, John F. Kiddoo, and W.L. Salisbury

William Polk Boggs served as a Private in the Confederate States Army, Company F, 5th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, Randolph County, GA, (Cuthbert Riffles”). He enlisted 19 Nov 1862 at Bridgeport, AL. Served in Captain John S. Kiddoo’s Company. He was wounded in the leg by a minnie ball on 8 Dec 1864 at Coosahatchie, SC and was rendered unable for service and received a wounded furlough to return home and was unable to return to military service before the surrender. He remained on crutches for more than a year after the surrender according to his statement in his application for Soldier’s Pension on 29 Sep 1920. After his death, his wife Martha A. Boggs received a Widow’s Pension until her death.

W. P. Boggs was born in Jackson County GA and always lived in Jackson County GA except for the time that he spent in service. According to his Pension Application he enlisted in Company F, 5th GA Regiment Infantry (Capt. John S. Kiddoo's Company on Nov 1862 at Bridgeport, Ala. He was wounded in the leg by minnie ball on Dec. 8th 1864, at Coosahatchie, SC and received a furlough to go home until fit for military service but after the sixty day furlough it was renewed and he was never able to return to service. W.P. Boggs gave information in the pension application on Sept 29, 1920 that as far as he knew, all of the men that he had served with were now dead. W. P. Boggs stated that Capt. John S. Kiddoo, who resided at Cuthbert, GA some years ago, but since died had advised him (W.P. Boggs) to make application for pension several years earlier.

(This may be Nancy, wife of Andrew Nichols. They had two sons, John and James. Nancy may have remarried after Andrew died to William D. Smith in Jackson County on July 26, 1866. William D. Smith died in 1871 and left a will in Jackson County. The Jackson County 1870 census list William D. Smith age 77 born in NC and Nancy age 55 born in GA. The Bible of Ezekiel Boggs list a Nancy Smith, born May 13, 1814. - pfh, Dec. 2001)
