Letter to Dora Wingate Swinton

The letter below was written in December of 1930 by James Wingate to Dora Wingate Swinton who lived in Gurdon Arkansas. James is the brother of Dora. The time is during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. James tells Dora he has suffered a stroke and that his children have moved him from Darlington to New York. He implies his wife may still be living also. He seems to be responding to an earlier letter from Dora. He says, “ Yes Hattie is still alive,” and later in the letter give her address. Hattie Parrot is the sister of James and Dora.

This letter provides information and names that will allow us to conduct further research on these family members. Why Dora kept this letter is not known, but we are grateful to Dora’s daughter Hattie (Babe) Swinton, Maggie Swinton Sharp, and Dorothy Montgomery who currently has the original copy of this letter and has provided us a copy.
