Old Wesley Chapel is a United Methodist Church. It is located in Swift Creek Township of Darlington County. We know that Dora Wingate Swinton was Methodist and a resident of Swift Creek Township in the 1880 federal census. Notice the names of the families of founding members.
According to the Marion Star newspaper, Ellen Swinton was married to Nick Kelley by a Reverend Abner Black on February 23, 1875. The church was organized months later on December 17, 1875. Church records reveal Albert Black was the second pastor of Old Wesley Chapel and Richard Mingo was the third pastor. Richard Mingo was a close neighbor of Ellen Swinton and is listed several names after Ellen in the 1880 federal census of Darlington County.
Official church records of membership have been lost so we have know way of knowing for certain, but the evidence points to this church. This page was part of a booklet that was prepared for the dedication of their new church on March 27, 1977.
